Non Resident and resident Pensioners prescription charges:

Some time ago a lady was charged at the Oria Chemist a huge sum for prescriptions, they had her EHIC card, her passport and a copy of her UK prescription which stated her DOB too, thus they knew she ought not to have been charged the 100 euro plus which caused her and her husband HUGE problems as their bank in Spain closed down during the pandemic and they had to borrow money, if anyone else goes in there ask them to read this which was sent to me by a friend who works at NHS in the overseas dept. thus she knows her stuff

What EHIC and GHIC covers

An EHIC or GHIC covers state healthcare, not private treatment.

With an EHIC or GHIC you can get medically necessary treatment in Spain on the same basis as a Spanish citizen. This means that you’ll get healthcare services for free or at a reduced cost.

An EHIC or GHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance – it does not cover everything, such as mountain rescue or being flown back to the UK (medical repatriation). Make sure you have both before you travel to Spain.

You may need to pay in full for treatment if you do not have an EHIC, GHIC or provisional replacement certificate (PRC).

Getting prescriptions

You can use a UK prescription to get medicines in Spain.

Prescription medicines are not free in Spain. With an EHIC you get a reduced rate, but you’ll still pay:

  • 50% of the prescription price
  • 10% of the prescription price if you have a UK State Pension ‒ you may need to show proof that you’re a pensioner to pay this rate
These prescription charges are non-refundable.

I am on the medical system in Spain and not all medication is on the cheaper prescription list.  Even with the EHIC etc if it is not in the prescription list you have to pay full price.

I agree several years ago a few prescriptions were taken off the cheap prescription list all have to pay more.

That lady was charged a great deal, my heart went out to her, her total bill should have been Euro 13, but they charged her  EURO 130, I asked her to send me the bill, when she did so, it stated 130,  nothing was itemised, which I found highly suspicious.   I do hope people will know the law now, that incident was nasty and totally unnecessary.   My NHS friend also sent me this information:   ENGLAND  A prescription costs £ 9.15 per item, but prepaying for an unlimited number of prescriptions is: £ 29.65 for 3 months.   Pensioners in ENGLAND of all nationalities pay NOTHING, but when in Spain for example an English person SHOULD pay exactly what a Spanish pensioner pays.   A number of years ago I took a young Spanish girl to see my GP as she was not able to get a GP in London, he put her on the emergency list, gave her a prescription and there was no question about her being charged when I collect it with her!   These incidents leave a nasty taste, I suppose it's like Macron telling the French not to take the Astra Zenica vaccine, all this is doing is causing HUGE issues which will end in tears.    The Belgium's are very fair they charge an English person exactly what they charge their residents insurance companies, prior to Brexit an English person  was able to claim back all the treatment and medication costs from the NHS!  under the EU agreement they had.   I just hate anyone being taken advantage of

I do understand and my medication would cost me 100 per month of which I pay 4.50 euro.  When we choose to live in Spain we except their way of life and I would not go back to the UK just to not pay for my medication rescription.  I am very sorry for the lady who paid 130 euros and I hope visitors will look into what they are entitled to and maybe bring written info with them.

I'm sure when i queried it the costs were based on your supposed income.  So a spanish pensioner on a very low  income will pay less than others.  Don't ask me how they work it out i dont know.

I do not think income comes into it, I have never been asked to complete paper work on my pension.  We pay a very small amount for our prescriptions.

Ednab.  I never had to fill in any forms either i think they just assumed if we were retired over here we could afford to pay a small amount.   And it is only a small amount about 10% of normal price.

Angelina, this is the topic to which you refer to:

 Medication costs in Spain

The lady in question was rather vague on certain matters, plus when challenged, she never replied.

You know what they say about 'silence speaking volumes'.

I agree with Ednab, I dont think income has anything to do with it. I am diabetic and I get my meds for about 2 euro, but I also have to have other meds that are not on the list and i pay full price for them ,they cost me 12 euro's per month. I still find it very difficult to believe that the chemist in Oria cheated this lady, they have been nothing but helpful to me. I think the whole thing was a huge misunderstanding.
