Hi

We are looking to purchase a permanent home in your area. During our search we came across a property on a site of about 20 other similar homes on the immediate outskirts of Oria. Do any of you guys live on this site? If not, what is the general mix of nationalities in the area. We are not being xenophobic and are a very friendly couple, but a move at our stage in life and making a mistake, would / could prove catastrophic.

Most probably we would rent a property in the area for as long as it takes to fall in love with the people and the place of Oria.

Straight to the point guys.....is it advisable to put down roots in Oria?

Many thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,

I live in Oria, (out on the campo) we have it all in Oria, very friendly helpful Town Hall that speak English, public swimming pool, 24hr medical centre, 4 Spanish supermarkets, Carrefour express & Fuel Garage, Builders merchant, Garden centre. Restaurants and Bars, School, I don't mix much, but there are plenty of English about and I believe Dutch. For such a small Town/village Oria has it all and a lovely place to live.

I hope this helps.  Jenni

Hi Jenni

Thank you so much for your reply. In one swoop you have managed to answer most of my questions. On quite a few past posts there has been opinionated statements concerning the coldness during the short winter months. May I ask for your honest opinion.

I do hope we keep in touch.

Mike and Viv.

Hi Mike.

I lived in Oria for 13 and half years and i have to say a part of my heart still belongs to that beautiful picturesque  village. In my experience you'll either love it or hate it.  Ive seen many people come and go over the years.  Alot of people who have probably never lived there will try put you off saying its too cold in winter etc. Yes it's true Oria can be colder as it sits on top of a mountain range at approx 1022metres above sea level, but In my experience aslong as you have a good heating system/insulated house etc the winters are not any worse than uk and only for a couple of months anyway! In contrast I found the summer's are cooler up there though (which is a blessing) in all those years we survived without air conditoning which now living at the coast i could not be without haha.

The only thing that did get to me admittedly was the wind, does seem to be alot fiercer up there. The park home site you mention is lovely and predominately British reside there. But the village itself is very Spanish and the ex pats are there also if you need them. It's a lovely community, and like jenni says the village has everything you need (and one of the only villages with a 24hr med centre). I would definitely suggest renting first to get a feel for the place and see how you cope with the seasons! I pop up there every 5 weeks or so to continue seeing clients that have all become good friends and i miss them all dearly (I'm a mobile hairdresser). I hope you fall in love with Oria like i and many others have. Good luck on your search!

HI Mike,

We searched all over southern Spain to find somewhere  to live permanently in the future. We cant at the moment but we had some personal things happen which made us decide "s*d it" and buy a place and use it as a holiday home until were able to move full time (we get ut there as much as we can). Anyway in the end we chose Oria. Its a great mix of locals and expats and is an absolutely beautiful village. We chose here because we wanted Spain not mini Britain. Its peaceful and quiet but still has everything you need. A few supermarkets and bars, an absolutely amazing butchers, even a Garden centre ( which is actually like an aladdins cave when you see what they have for sale in there) and the town hall is brilliant (even have free Spanish lessons). The town even has its own medical centre with an ambulance. Albox is about 25 mins away and has everything else you could possibly need. Yes the weather is quite cold in the winter but not a big deal. As someone else has said, the summers aren't as hot as further down, but what that means is theyre still roasting but a little more comfortable (although can still reach high 30's easily). Theres lots of fiestas on and the village is very Spanish but the locals are lovely. Its a great base for driving out to the beaches or other attractions and towns (the motorways are always virtually empty). Strangely were just on the outskirts of Oria but I haven't clue where the mobile home park is !!

Hi Mike & Viv,

Well my honest opinion is between end of Nov to end of March the days can be varied from very cold, I'm talking Coat hat gloves, to up to 23 degrees, February this year was amazing we were all in t.shirt and shorts, but last years it was very cold. But its brilliant sun shine clear blue skies. Now the nights are a different matter, they are freezing, the temperature drops right down and we do occasionally have a frost, my concern for you guys is if you are looking at a park home, how well insulated is it, does it have heating, because you will definitely need it in the winter. We have lived in various houses, and the best by far is the old Cortijo's with there 3' thick walls and roofs, we found modern villa's had no insulation and were very cold and cost us a fortune trying to heat them. Perhaps try renting first before you buy????? that might be an option. I hope this helps   Regards  Jenni. P.S shout if you need anymore info.

Hi Paul (I hope that's correct)

Thank you for your brilliant reply.

The small site is south east on the google maps. I believe there is a Daisey's bakery with a left turn as you are coming out of Oria. Along that road approximately 1/4 mile, see map below with the red arrow.

Fantastic feedback, with loads of useful information. Now we have a lot of feedback on the weather during the winter months. Some are saying to look at bricks and mortar instead of Park Home style dwellings. Is that not more difficult / stressful ?

The jury is still out on Oria. We will be coming out early 2020 to get a flavour of the place, is there anywhere to rent for a couple of weeks to start off with? After that a more longer stay if all goes well.

Oh forgot to say......we have a beautiful German Shepard, who is my sweetheart and then I have a wife LOL.

Kindest regards

Mike

HI Jenni

Thank you for this information.

We will be following your recommendation about renting first.

The weather during winter isn't putting us off, very much like the UK during winter but summer for 8 months is most appealing.

We will be back in touch, especially when we come over for a visit, maybe we could meet up for a chat?

Kindest regards

Mike and Viv

Hi Mike,

You are correct it is Paul :)

I see from your map where it is (I haven't had any cause to go that way so hadn't seen it). That's a fair stroll into the village (nothing really starts till you hit the petrol station). If youre after wandering to the bars etc Id suggest closer to the village

Why do you think that bricks and mortar is more difficult and stressful? Yes ours took 8 months to purchase (must admit was a bit stressful)  but our solicitor ensured that everything was completely legal and had an AFO before completion.(very important in this area ),,Once done everythings easy. Services (water and electric) all done by email (tranfered automatically with villa purchase). cheap (spanish version) of tax etc. Weve found it all a lot simpler than here once purchase completed

If you want to rent for a couple of weeks, the Shepherds Rest has a few apartments they rent out (In fact the barman in the Gasolinera Restaurante next to the petrol station stayed there for a month also before he moved into his new place in the village near Pepes bar.)

If you have facebook look up Shepherds Rest ( they also have a wellness retreat there) and they have a website www.shepherdsrest.org

They'll be more than happy to help you out and probably show you around (Theyre an English couple)

PS...the lady above is correct..It can be freezing at night in winter but log burner on, thick duvet on the bed and its cozy (to me anyway but I don't feel the cold. My missus might say other wise)

Best Regards

Paul
