I think all expats need to know this especially after reading the experience the lady had in Oria this morning with the Doctor there when she went for HELP, that doctor needs to be told this.

UK sent to SPAIN £274 million pounds for the provision of medical treatment to EXPATS and UK Citizens

SPAIN sent to the UK Euro 7.4 million for the provision medical treatment for Spanish Citizens!

Please forward this information to your friends and other expats.   they need to know this in the event of experiencing what the lady did this morning in the Oria Health centre.

One of the TOP UK newspapers, prob. Observer. Times, Daily Mail etc, I cannot give you full details as it is on the hard drive at home in UK, I kept the figures to give to my friends who work in the medical profession here in Spain and they were stunned.

Wow, that just goes to show how many people are accessing Spanish medical care using their EHIC. These figures are based on the cost of the medical services provided to UK residents by Spain, and the cost of services provided by the NHS to Spanish residents, and are a reflection of the use of the EHIC cards. They have nothing to do with any citizens of either country that have taken up residence in another country, simply the cost that can be charged back to the home country under the rules of the EHIC scheme.

Interesting stuff!

Yes, correct.  If you are Resident here - i.e. you have Residencia - you are either on the Spanish health system or covered by private health cover; the money paid in by UK would have nothing to do with that.

Also, EHIC cards can only be used for emergency treatment.

Hi what about medication costs, in uk pensioners do not pay for their medication, they paid during their working life, I paid 50% of my salary in NHS and tax.   I am asking this because I received a private email from a couple who have been charged about 110 euro for their medication, that sounds very expensive to me, I asked them what is was:blood pressure, cholesterol medication and pain killers,  nothing expensive, I have a feeling they were charged FULL PRICE, do you know

It depends on whether they are in Spanish health system with S1 form or private health I think.  Medications on Spanish health are all subsidised - not sure about private health

You paid 50% of your salary in NHS and tax? I assume you mean National Insurance and Tax, and  50% of your salary is a exaggeration.

I am a resident in Spain and my prescription cost per month would come to 100 euros and I pay 4 euro 60 cents.  If you are not a resident this could be why the extra cost.
