Hi Sue & Simon, there are lots of areas with little to no light pollution around Oria (as well as other places of course), I know someone has built an observatory in Oria, along the road towards Cullar, and although there is a small village with some street lights, about 5kms away from where I live, on a clear night the sky is wonderfully dark, and the stars etc, are  a spectacular sight.......Milky Way with the naked eye for example.

My husband has an observatory which we are hoping to bring with us .we are coming over in April for the first time where would you suggest would be a good place too stay .Can you tell us what kind of life you have there and why you love it so much .we are both working at the moment so we are going to take our time over the next couple of years staying in different places deciding where we want too live . What is the weather like in oria today and in the winter months Thank for getting back to me suza

Hi Suza, not easy to answer your questions

Where to stay, is that area or type of accommodation, both are really dependent on your own preferences, but try googling for accommodation in your preferred area.

‘What kind of life I have and why I love it so much’? Well we’re all different, and we all like different things, but I’m not a ‘Britain with sun’ type, I believe that we should try to integrate and embrace the Spanish lifestyle in order to enjoy our lives here. Plus you may like things that you never thought you would, i.e. I know a lady that, when in Britain, she would get excited when the Harrods van made a delivery to her, now she gets that same excitement when the builders’ merchant delivers.

The weather in Oria is not nice today, this is the best place to get weather forecasts: http://www.aemet.es/en/eltiempo/prediccion/municipios/oria-id04070

I’ve been communicating with someone about Chirivel, a town close to and very similar to Oria, so if you search for ‘Advice on Chirivel’, on the Chirivel forum, there’s more info there

Good hunting

There is an important astronomical observatory at Calar Alto near the small village of Bayarcal which therefore must have the wonderfully clear sky that you seek.  The winters are cold but dry and summer short, hot and arid.  If you want to be closer to the coast, the small villages in the Sorbas area where I live and  also the Sierra Cabrera near Mojacar,  have wonderful starry skies at night and are warmer in the winter.
