Hi everyone

I have just joined this forum, as I will be holidaying for a week in May (7-14).  This will be my first ever trip as a lone traveller and wondered if there are any ex pats in Mojacar or surrounding areas, who may like to meet up and give me an idea of the area and what life is like living there.  I am heading for early retirement and looking at the possibility of long term rentals in Spain, with a view to purchasing eventually.  Any information is invaluable to me at this stage and knowing that it would be easy to make friends and enjoy a good social life would be paramount to my decision.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks.

Belinda

Hi Belinda,

We won't be in Mojacar the week you are visiting but I'd like to offer you some gentle encouragement regarding retiring to the area.

We moved to Mojacar 3 years ago having taken early retirement and it was a great decision. There are lots of Brits ( I hate the word expat) and it's very easy to get chatting in a bar and make friends - as you will see when you visit in May! Even better, learn Spanish and chat to the locals!

I think you are very sensible renting first. We love Mojacar and still have a place there , but we now live a few miles inland where it feels a little more like real Spain and less like being on holiday all of the time. It probably takes at least 6 months to really know an area so my advice is to take it slowly and enjoy.

The very best of luck and enjoy your holiday!

Hi Juliet, thanks so much for responding.  I’ve an open mind to anywhere surrounding Mojacar and have always thought about villages more so, so that I can ingratiate myself into Spanish life and avoid a more touristy life.  Huercal Overa looks nice.  Any advice or help is most welcome.  I’d definitely rent before committing to buy too.  That way I can take my time getting a feel for the place.  Many thanks again. Hi again Belinda.

Huercal Overa is a nice town and has the advantage of having a large hospital as well as various government  administrative offices which is very handy as there's very little public transport in this area. Lorca is over the border in Murcia but is lovely and has much better shopping facilities than where we live in the Almanzora Valley, as well as a castle and pretty old town. Where we are there are some towns, such as Alfoquia and Arboleas, which have large British communities but there are also plenty of much more Spanish towns and villages. The scenery is beautiful, especially at this time of year when the cirrus trees are heaving with oranges and lemons and the ground bellow them thickly carpeted with yellow wood sorrel.

Have a lovely holiday and good luck!
