Sorry but that does sound a little confusing.

I had my own business in the UK and I am liable for tax in the UK on my earning and pensions for 2020-2021 and part of 2021-2022.

I cannot choose where I pay those taxes as they were earned in the UK and final payment is due on 31 January 2022 for 2020-2021 and 31 January 2023 for 2021-2022.

As I cannot be liable for tax in a country I did not earn that money in, surely I only pay it in the UK.

simple question for you, are you a Spanish resident or UK resident

It means, under the new ruling. I become a “resident” in Spain on that date but subject to terms and conditions for a further 5 years before full residency status is granted.

Sorry if this is not clear but they are the rules being imposed.

if you are a Spanish resident then you pay your tax in Spain, your Spanish accountant will need to find out what country you pay tax to so i would speak to them it might be the UK it might be here , they will clarify this for you, it can be a minefield , but you will not pay tax twice , Spain and the UK are interlinked with Tax so it should not be a problem , just a pain at the moment

if you as you said earned the  monies in the UK seems like you will pay it there , BUT it all depends on when you got your Spanish residencia , as the tax man wants paid as soon as you are a Spanish resident

I am not actually a “resident” for 5 years, under the terms of the application but I assume that they apply the rules on the date you become a “probationary” resident. However if you do not pay tax, and this is becoming more apparent, in more than one country then, as previously stated, I am obliged to complete my tax affairs in the UK first.

I do not care where I pay tax, only that I pay it once.
