I’m thinking of taking residencia and the only fly is the driving licence. We need to be in the U.K. 6 months a year till our property is sold and we have cars there so Does anyone know of an insurer who will insure a U.K. reg car for the year that’s being used in U.K. for 6 months a year on a Spanish driving licence? I’m assuming direct line won’t 🙄 and I’ve been with them for over 30 years. The thought of sitting a Spanish driving test in Spanish after Dec horrifies me. Not that I’d fail of course lol.
Have you tried using an insurance broker? Since the advent of direct insurances, they have had to become specialists and are there to be used.

We have our UK plated car insured by Liberty Seguros through Albox Insurance. It covers the car and also has breakdown cover in the UK and in Spain. It also entitles any driver over 25 to drive the car. Speak to Ben he is very helpful.

Are you resident in UK or Spain, the understanding was if you are a resident in Spain and had a UK plated car it has to matriculated on to Spanish plates after one month

Sorry for the confusion you did say that you were stil resident in the UK but I think you can only drive a car that is not registered in that country for a couple of months not sure

Hi
We are not resident at the minute but our insurance covers our UK car for unlimited time in Spain and the UK. If you are not resident Inthink you are allowed 90 days at a time in Spain. We are seeking residency at the minute and will be matriculating our car before December.

Can I ask Who is your insurer. That may help us. I was asking, if I take residencia, but I want to say in U.K. 6 months a year till properties sold so pay U.K. taxes , so not fiscally resident. I’d be driving a U.K. car that I own , while in the U.K. On a Spanish licence is the thing.

We use Albox Insurance and our insurance is with Liberty Seguros. We currently don’t have residencia or Spanish driving licences but hope to do that when we can get back to Spain. We had always had our insurance through SAGA but Liberty Seguros was much cheaper. One thing you might want to consider if you take up residency before you sell your UK property is you will be liable to 20% tax in Spain on the profit of your UK property. The ideal situation is to sell in the UK and then take up residency.
I also think that once you get Residencia you have to stay in Spain for at least 183 days minimum which makes you a tax resident in Spain.
Contact Ben at Albox Insurance he is very helpful

Why not exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one now, and apply for a UK test in order to obtain a new UK licence. Can't see anything in the regs. that says you can't. At least the theory will be in English!
