I heat my pool in the UK with solar panels, which are basically rubber mats through which I circulate water from the pool using a solar powered water pump. I also use this in the villa pool I rent in Lanzarote (January -March). Total cost about £200.00. Running costs, nothing. I obtain an average water temperature of 30c.
The problem with commercial solar thermal pool heating is how to dispose of the excess hot water you will generate in the hot summer months. You need to dump it somewhere. The best option in my opinion, if you want a gauranteed pool temperature even when the sun is not shining, would be an air source heat pump, which is more controllable, as you can switch it off once the required temperature is reached, and you can switch it off totally when not required, the efficiency is higher according to the ambient air temperature. Costs around £1000.00 plus installation costs, whereas a solar thermal water heater will continue generating hot water, and costs £5000.00+, and is a lot more complicated, with expansion vessels, etc.
