Thanks for your comment, however you really do need to check your facts. Different areas of Europe have multiple variations, John sons statement when given was presented with chief medical officers flanking each shoulder. And you think this is his doing. To bring politics in to such a serious sit...

...uation, is foolhardy

No need to tell me James, I'm in Ireland, Tell it to those attending the funerals of Covid-19 victims.

James,  Please forgive me rising to your post.    Based on their poor track record for relaibility, roughly 49% of people just can't  accept that Borris or Trump are going to lead well. Maybe a select few from the 51% will benefit.. but the poor are further diminished.   As all the horrors unfold, we luckier creatures opting out by seeking peace on the sun warmed shores of Spain should be trying to heal the divisions at home.   I  apologise here to you..I don't like being polarised.. it seems to bring the worst out in me.   Bill

Very well said  James (jtp890), I would imagine that the PM has had talks with the UK Health Authorities and that there was a collective decision made based on the information garnered from the professionals.

Good Man Andy! The strains of the Covid-19 are different in Northern Ireland from those in the Republic of Ireland. Coronavirus-Unionist and Coronavirus-Nationalist. Some experts Boris Johnson is taking advice from! Will somebody living near Boris Johnson just shake him up and bit and perhaps then he will see the light.

From Breaking News Ireland today - I inserted the words "Nationalist" and "Unionist" to avoid any confusion:-

Stormont deputy first minister Michelle O’Neill (Nationalist) has said schools, universities and colleges in Northern Ireland should close in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

She claimed the public were concerned and fearful and the difference with the Republic of Ireland’s approach was causing confusion.

The Republic has implemented blanket closures and teachers just a few miles away from each other across the open Irish border are following different official approaches.

Stormont First Minister Arlene Foster (Unionist) has backed the UK-wide strategy to keep public institutions open for now.

Her Sinn Fein counterpart said: “Now is the time to take action and ensure the schools, universities and colleges are closed and that needs to happen immediately.”

We need to see one approach across the island, one message that is consistent so things are not even more confused

She said large numbers of parents had decided not to send their children to classes today and government needed to listen to the public.

She added: “People are fearful.”

Her volte-face from Thursday when she backed the decision to keep schools open was made “on the back of public concern that is clearly there and the angst there among the public”.

She declared: “Now is the time to take action.”

. . . . . . .and from the European Union (Please note this is only a small section of what was published)
Necessary measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic

Given the current epidemiology and risk assessment, and the expected developments in the next days to few weeks, the following public health measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic are necessary in EU/EEA countries:

  • Social distancing measures should be implemented early in order to mitigate the impact of the epidemic and to delay the epidemic peak. This can interrupt human-to-human transmission chains, prevent further spread, reduce the intensity of the epidemic and slow down the increase in cases, while allowing healthcare systems to prepare and cope with an increased influx of patients. Such measures should include:
    • the immediate isolation of symptomatic persons suspected or confirmed to be infected with COVID-19;
    • the suspension of mass gatherings, taking into consideration the size of the event, the density of participants and if the event is in a confined indoor environment;
    • social distancing measures at workplaces (for example teleworking, suspension of meetings, cancellation of non-essential travel);
    • measures in and closure of schools, taking into consideration the uncertainty in the evidence of children in transmitting the disease, need for day care for children, impact on nursing staff, potential to increase transmission to vulnerable grandparents;
    • cordon sanitaire of residential areas with high levels of community transmission

Spain followed your ideas without banning travel, now the problem has spread from Madrid to the coastal areas

Breaking today (Friday)

Presidente del Gobierno Pedro Sánchez has announced a nationwide Estado de Alarma as from Saturday.  Cabinet meeting Saturday will be followed by announcement of emergency measures.

Expect closure of all non-essential shops and services, quarantine at home for two weeks and trips out to go shopping and to pharmacy only. Police will be patrolling the streets.  They have already started in Vera Playa; Region de Murcia is already under two week quarantine and Communidad de Valencia earlier today (prior to government announcement) announced closure of all bars and restaurants.

. . . . . not my ideas, but the ideas of responsible thinking governments who are trying to stem the rise of Covid-19.

.  .  .  . and guess who is most behind in the whole process - Mr Boris Johnson. I'm sure England/Wales/Northern-Ireland will thank him for his ineptitude and his delaying.

You really are some sort of a prat Mathew, try and keep your hatred of Boris Johnson out of the discussion.  Johnson is being lead by health officials in the U.K. and guided by same.  Your anti Tory and BREXIT views are well know so just give it a break for goodness sakes.
