Hi everyone.

Some on here may remember we asked for some advice about possibly buying in Mojacar Playa.. well we are due to complete on our apartment in mid May and coming out for a week at the end of May to get things sorted! We have a few questions we hope people will again kindly help us with.

1. Locksmith - we want to have a new lock and keys for the apartment. Can anyone recommend a good locksmith?

2. Furniture removal - the apartment has a number of items which we want removing. E.g. old sofas. I know there is an option to let people sell/give away items on here but they are poor quality (apartment was previously a long term rental) so can anyone recommend someone who gets rid of old furniture reasonably?

3. New furniture and equipment. For ease as we only have a week in May we are planning to have an Ikea delivery arrive while we are there. We know they will deliver for €69. However, can people recommend any other good and reasonably priced furniture stores locally e.g. Vera. We will also need a few things like a TV and microwave, possibly a coffee machine etc. Where is good to go? We will also want to go somewhere to get bedding, pillows, cushions etc so any recommendations for things like this most welcome too.

4. Air conditioning - any good repair people to recommend? There is an issue with the air conditioning - as part of our reservation contract the vendor is responsible for replacing the remote unit on the wall. If this fixes it great, if not it is our responsibility.

We are so excited to be competing soon. We had great advice from you all before which is why we are back with more questions! Whether you can answer one point, a few or all, all advice gratefully received. We are trying to be as planned as possible as one of us is a teacher so for now we only have the one week to get as much sorted as possible.

Thanks everyone.

David .

Hi David,

We found Lopez to be a good starter place to pick up lots of things for the house, DIY stuff that you’ll need, plus outdoor items for garden and pool.  It has large warehouse-type premises on the roundabout at Antas, outside Vera, but you can get the full address and opening times online.  Once you’ve got more used to places around, you will find many other shops but this place is good for many things at reasonable cost all under one roof to get you going.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,

Chrissie

Hi David,

We bought our apartment in 2015 & had many of the same issues, we bought a settee & chairs & lots of other things from Ikea in Murcia as there wasn't much else around that had things we liked & furniture is very expensive. We had to have the larger things delivered & it was ok until the van actually turned up as they had no idea where we were & we don't speak Spanish. We ended up asking some one to explain for us & they eventually found where we were.

A lot of the furniture in the apartment wasn't to our taste & Tammy who has a shop on the front that sells second hand furniture took quite a lot of it & sold it for us.

We recently had our kitchen totally redone & we bought a toaster & kettle from Euronics in Garrucha, they were a bit more expensive than Lopez in Mojcar but they had a nicer range & they were not as basic. Lopez in Mojacar is a massive shop & they sell just about everything, also they are very handy.

There is a lovely shop over the road from Titos called Fig run by an English lady that sells bedding & lots of other nice decorative household items. They are very reasonable as well. Ambiente which is near the Commercial Centre is also very nice.

DCM should be able to sort your air con out, they are over the road from Lopez in Mojacar.

Hope this helps

Debbie

The ones we have used and can recommend are:

  • Locksmith: @deantewlocksmith on Facebook or [email protected] on email.
  • House clearance: Mark at Castano Home Clearance https://www.facebook.com/castanoclearance/
  • In Vera the domestic goods shop just up from Iceland is very good for fridges. For microwaves and other equipment Lopez on the El Real Poligano in Antas and Mojacar Playa is good, and even though their returns policy and customer service is appalling we always seem to end up there.
  • We bought quite a lot of furniture from Koala, also on the El Real industrial estate. Not the cheapest but very good quality. We also bought dining and sitting furniture from Paul Davis at Homes & Beyond in Garrucha who also fitted out kitchen and bathrooms. https://www.facebook.com/homesandbeyondgarrucha/
  • For second hand furniture I thoroughly recommend The Attic in El Cucador. http://www.theattic-almeria.com/index.htm
  • Airconditioning. We had new a/c units fitted at Los Gallardos and older existing units serviced at Palomares by Nick Howe at Solosat who is highly recommended. https://www.facebook.com/solosatellite

Dean the Locksmith is very good.

The electrical shop just up from Iceland.

Embargos on Antas Industrial Estate sells interior and exterior furniture it is like a furniture clearance place, so what you see is what you get. I and a few of our neighbours have had some very nice things, sometimes you go and there is nothing and other times a good choice. It's certainly worth a look if your at Lopez.

One other thing to be aware of is that electrical items here usually carry a two year guarantee but have to be returned in their original box if there is a problem, along with copy of receipt. So flat pack your boxes and keep them just in case. This particularly applies if you buy anything from Lopez as they will try to fob you off if you need to return anything.

If. Your old sofa etc is only for throwing away see previous post re dates of local council collections.

Good luck, happy shopping .

Hi David

Having seen the recommendation from Debbie about the bedding shop called FIG I would like to add that it is my daughter Holly who runs this shop and it is on the Playa opposite Tito's carpark....just wanted to let you know that there is a website ....www.figfurnishings.com on which you will see the complete range of bedding and other items available from the shop (including all prices) and orders can be placed via the website, and the exact location of the shop is on the website.  FIG stands for Furnishings, Interiors and Gifts.......I know Holly would be delighted to see you at the shop when you arrive here.

I hope your move goes smoothly.

Kind Regards

Dennis
