In previous posts I advised that people in their 60's were too late (no offence, I'm older) buying property in Spain. I was proved wrong and I know people (even single people) who bought property in Mojacar Playa age 70+ thereby making mincemeat of my advice.
The process of acquiring a Residencia in Spain is not a short one and I think you'd need legal advice and it doesn't come cheap. If you sell your home in the UK your boats are burnt and return fulltime to the UK will cause problems.
I'm not trying to depress the livin' bejazus out of you. But, the alternative is to rent a property in the off season for 3 months and you will discover in about 5 weeks of the period if Spain is for you. Renting a good quality 2 bedroom apartment November - March* is not overly expensive especially when compared to rentals in other countries. If you want to make your situation pay you could do well to rent out your UK property to finance your 3 months "holiday." There are calls from people to have the 90 days period to be extended to some non EU nationals, but I reckon this will take a long time if it ever is to happen.
In the meantime you could do worse than looking up websites of real estate agents (Price-Brown, VIP, K7 Inmobilaria etc) just to get a handle on the price of Spanish property.
Guide on Rental Property:- *€750 per month (utilities included) for a well located modern 2 bedroom apartment - and you can get much cheaper depending on location, condition, etc.
