Hi,

My wife and I are looking to move to Costa Almeria (Mojacar/Garrucha areas) from the UK. We can sell out property and are lucky enough to be able to purchase a comfortable property in these areas with a little cash left over.

However, our problem is work. Neither of us a particularly qualified for anything and neither of us speak Spanish - a couple of small disadvantages!!

Where money we have leftover from the sale of out house could be used to fund the purchase of a business or some kind or an investment but we would need an income. Also, we would not want to simply retire in Spain and do nothing - I enjoy working (even part time would work).

The only thing I have come up with at this time is property rental and I am not sure this is financially viable as from what I can see the income would not be great.

Can anybody offer me any advice on what is possible in the area primarily as an investment of any kind (including possibly buying into a business) rather than employed work (as I would be at such a disadvantage to the Spanish speaking residents I doubt I could obtain gainful employment).

Thank you in advance for any advice I receive.

Pete

Hi there; I’ll offer one point of view and pleeeeeeease remember; this is just one persons opinion, so please take it for that.

We both came here with a little seed money, enough to tide us over for a short while.  My wife is a qualified Naturopath and a certified Yoga teacher, so she was keen to utilize her skills.  It became evident that to do anything; we had to learn Spanish.  No big surprise or indeed shock because we both intended to learn Spanish anyway - this really gave us the impetus though.

Ashlí, my wife, jumped through a lot of hoops setting up a business so that she could practice, and also having her qualifications validated and recognized by OCN-FENACO, the governing body for Naturopathy etc.  She is established now, and us beginning to grow; but it was a slow start.

I am an IT professional; I have a handful of qualifications, including Cisco certification, but these skills just do not find much need for them this end of Spain.  Were I to travel to Murcia / Valencia or even Almería, I would find my skills in more demand; but I choose to live here, where we prefer the pace of life.  So, I work part time as a Waiter / Barman.

Why am I telling you this? Simply it is to be prepared to do what’s necessary for you to live.  Also, to encourage you to learn Spanish, if this is to be your chosen home.

Buying a business here is possible, but FRAUGHT with many pitfalls and potholes for the unwary.  I would encourage you to come over, don’t jump straight into buying (again, that is something else within which lies many many traps for the unwary as many on this forum can and will attest), rent for a while, find the area you like, get used to it, get Residencia and talk to people, both Spanish and English.  Learn a little about your chosen home before committing yourself to buying anything, because no matter how much research you do, talking with people on the ground will doubtless open your eyes to much that you had not even considered.

I do hope this doesn’t sound negative - it’s not meant to be - all I seek to do is to encourage you to come to this wonderful, beautiful (sometimes maddening) but always incredible and breathtaking country, immerse yourself in it, don’t jump into buying and risk the pitfalls many before you have stumbled into and learn from others.  The time you take renting, researching and getting the lie of the land will ultimately be very very rewarding indeed.

Buena suerte

Darío

Without a good grasp of Spanish work in the Costa Almeria is likely to be problematic. The area is coming out of the financial crisis but it's still not easy.
