Is one of you a U.K. state pensioner? And are you both already resident here?

If so you don’t need health insurance, you get free health cover via the S1 form supplied by the DWP in Newcastle.

Hope this helps

If English citizens become Spanish residents is access to the NHS lost?

My wife and myself were planning to move to Spain, we are both UK pentioners and considering Spanish residency because we plan to spend more time in Spain than the UK

No, you don’t lose access to the NHS if you are U.K. state pensioners AND if you arrive before 31 December this year.

If you can get here by then you need to give the DWP your new address (and a Spanish bank account so they can pay your pension in as euros) and ask them to send you an S1 (to your new Spanish address). This will enable both of you to register at the local INSS Office (social security) for a Tarjeta Sanitaria. That card gives you access to free heath care in Spain - and you can also take your S1 with you on any visits to the U.K. and access all NHS treatment/prescriptions free whilst you are visiting.

But not if you arrive in 2021 ...

When the Brexit arrangements are complete the reciprocal health care will probably no longer apply.

If you're moving abroad on a permanent basis, you'll no longer be entitled to medical treatment in the UK under normal NHS rules. This is because the NHS is a residence-based healthcare system. Most people will also not be entitled to use a UK-issued EHIC card to access healthcare abroad.

Any visitor to the UK gets free emergency treatment, but if not resident in Britain should normally be, and increasingly will be, charged.   ie if you fall and break your hip , you will not be charged for A&E, but you will be charged for a hip replacement unless it is urgently needed to preserve life.

No, this is incorrect.

As Colvic stated - they are U.K. state pensioners. They are therefore protected under the terms of the 2019 Withdrawal Agreement. Brexit is already complete! We left the EU in January. All that remains to be negotiated is a trade agreement.

As long as Colvic and his wife become resident in Spain by 31 December they will be issued with an S1. That will entitle them to use any NHS services in the U.K. whenever they visit the U.K.

Kath52 does not need it. It’s free for U.K. state pensioners that arrive in Spain by 31 December and seek residency, their S1 form is a reciprocal health agreement between Spain and the U.K. giving them free access to the Spanish health system.
