Well if you are from the UK you should have S1 forms from the gov.uk for your Spanish healthcare here.

We have S1 forms but surely that only covers us for emergency treatment not everything.

if you have registered your S1 and have the Spanish health card then you are covered for everything.  My husband has been treated for a heart attack and I have had breast cancer so can say without a doubt that they cover everything and very efficiently too.  Why pay for Health Insurance if you don't have to?  It doesn't necessarily get you seen any quicker.

Thank you so much for that information, it really helps to know that we don't have to pay. out for health insurance which would eat into pensions.

'Covers you for everything', is not strictly accurate.

The form S1 entitles you to public healthcare in the Spanish system.  The costs of which is met by the UK (if you are a UK pensioner)

The difference comes in that the Spanish system is different from the NHS.  As a pensioner you will pay towards your prescription medication usually 10% but it may be up to 50% (depending on your income.  Certainly, in my case I have had to change medication as the drugs I take are not part of the healthcare list so I would have had to pay the total cost even though I am a resident with a health card.

The other thing to bear in mind is that many Spaniards choose to pay privately for some tests (scans, mri's and the like) to speed up the process rather than wait for the public system. They then revert to the public system for treatment.

The Google link below gives you a comprehensive explanation of the system, how, it works and how to obtain it.

Hope this helps. K
