This is very tragic, but also an extremely complex issue.
Asylum seeking used to be very rare, one would hear only of dissidents, spies and the likes seeking political asylum, in fact it would make headline news.

Now it is completely different. These poor souls who perished are said to be from Algeria; i didn't realise Algeria was an unsafe country.
Let's look at safe countries where people are travelling to, the EU, UK, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. Where else? This means the rest of the world is unsafe, how therefore can these few countries accommodate the remaining 6 billion people. If any of the safe countries interfere with the unsafe countries they are unwelcome and seen as oppressors themselves. It seems that spending billions in foreign aid is not working either. If people smuggling became an international capital crime it would be seen as barbaric.
So what is the answer and how has the world got into such a state?
The reasons always seem to be ....religeon, greed, and the theft of their lands.....just all so sad.
