With considerable assistance from the helpful advice on this forum, we have taken the plunge and are in the process of buying a holiday apartment on a small urbanisation in Mojacar.

The living room has a chimney and is currently fitted with an electric replica 'wood burner' but I am interested in replacing this with a pellet burner. Would appreciate any observations or advice please.

we had a pellet burner in our open plan 2 bed villa and it heated the whole area very well.  you need electricity for it to work or it just shuts down in a power cut.  the pellet ashes needed cleaning out every morning and we used a fire vacuum for this when they were cold and then disposed of it in the bin.   you can buy pellets easily in Lopez fetaria and we kept a bag spare all the time.  the chimney needed sweeping once a year.

Thank you for your helpful reply Alicia.

I am also looking for suggestions about decent installers if anyone has had a pellet burner fitted?

Thank you again Alicia, I have just looked at their website and they cover Mojacar and seem to specialise in pellet burners, so definitely worth a look when we next visit to collect our keys.

One of the main benefits is that pellets are relatively inexpensive. Make sure you get a burner that is powerful enough to heat the entire area. Personally, I don't like the smell but that's more than compensated for by the amount of heat it throws out

Thank you Juliet, I haven't actually smelt a pellet burner so need to check that before I take the plunge!

can't say as we ever noticed a smell use good quality pellets and perhaps that makes a difference.  definately wish we could have one now in our apartment in Mojacar as ducted air con heats the ceilings well but not the floor levels so cold toes.

Hi.

We have recently had a pellet burner installed by a company called Climalonso.

Do not use this guy. I could have done better myself. Workmanship was appalling for a very simple job.

We bought the stove from Leroy Merlin at a great price online with free delivery.

Pellets we buy are €4.60 but if you buy quantity (a pallet) they are cheaper. Do not buy low quality they don't burn as well and soot up the stove and chimney.

We use about 1/2 a 15kg bag a day. 3pm - midnight So very cheap.

No smell apart from new pellet burner type smells.

I believe if its an existing chimney it will have to be lined. Pellet stoves work on a sealed venting system.

Finally...! I asked Acar for a quote that didn't happen but they are with hindsight favourite for us now.

We have had a pellet burner for the last few years having previous experience of having a wood stove and a wood gasification system. They are a lot less labour intensive, can be programmed to come on before you get up in the morning or when you come in at night, ( for us the biggest plus), No piles of wood to stack so cleaner to store your fuel and require no more maintainance than a wood stove or open fire. Easy to operate and relatively cheap and efficient to run.

They are not as pretty to watch the flame as a wood burner and the fan noise takes a little bit of getting used to but soon merges into the background as white noise and there is a definite smell outside where ours vents but nothing inside our home and it is no worse than the mild smell of burning wood and isn't overpowering. They do need electricity to function the ignition and control panel however it’s never affected us but imagine it would if you suffer regular outages of electricity

Overall we feel ours was the best choice for us in terms of low maintainance, efficient and economical heating.
