Morning all,

We are completing on a property in the Playa and I am trying to gauge what monthly electric costs might be.  I appreciate that electricity charges are significant in Spain but would be grateful if anyone can give a steer.

The property is a 2 bed, 1 bath apartment.  No AC at the moment.  Will be used primarily as a holiday home.

Any direction would be much appreciated.

Nick

Hi. Being very frugal with the electricity in our 2 bed apartment we can keep it to between 50 and 60 Euros a month. When it's rented out in the summer and the Aircon is used it can be up to 150!

Yes Juliet is quite right our bill is very similar for a 2 bed apartment the summer months the air conditioning is an expensive necessity. In particularly the electric charges has risen budget for 130 to 150 euros in the summer you will for sure need the air conditioning

Well, to say "you will for sure need the AC" I dare to doubt. I never use it and live here permanently for more than 6 years now. With a fan you can solve everything without any problem.
The electric bill depends completely on what you do and when you do it. So my bill for a 2 bed 1 bath apartment living alone is in summer around 25€ and in winter max 35€.

we dont compromise or scrape for our comforts especially  air con, is totally necessary here and a fan only pushes  warm air around the room  and is a very poor substitute having said that we power 2 fridge freezers , a chest freezer ans a 2 bed 2 bathroom with an average yearly  cost of approx 1400 euros , as i saiid we dont  compromise with anything so it is not too expensive , you can do cheaper but then you will need to cut corners

First problem is the potencia - you have a general 'fuse/rating' in the house that llows a maximum capcaity of electricity thereare about 6 bands and your standard charge per month is based on this - it can be changed of course but you need to research which band you are in.

Then there is the amount you use each month as a separate amount and obviously depends on how you use it and the unhelpful examples already given.

On top of that there are a number of different companies that do things slightly different from each other. This part is areal swings and roundabouts game.

This is why people are switching all the time and companies always making tempting offers

It can be complicated but doesn't have to be. Approach the three sections above in that order and it should be clearer?

One simple step as you are probably making major changes is to research agents who look for the right price structure based on your circumstances? You need a company with a good reputation as there are plenty of agencies competing for your business -even Carrefour the last time I visited??

I had other issues to deal with so used a company called Evergreen electrica based in Fenguerola but a National service and they have  a really good reputation for customer service - not a Spanish strong point sadly. There are other agencies that also have good reputations but this has served me fine so far.

Lastly, get the old figures from your solicitor - I have it in mind they have old bills to check that debts have been paid and often they will provide a change over service for you?

Good luck with it

Shay

Thanks Shay - really good advice.

As far as I am aware the solicitor is resolving all the utility connections etc as part of their service.  No idea who the utilities providers will be but I did see somewhere else that there is a comparison service and it might be that we need to jump on that as soon as we know what consumption might be.

I will budget top end in the hope of being pleasantly surprised!
