Hi, I’m thinking of buying a small beach property for holiday lets, what are holiday rentals like in the area? Is it just seasonal or do you get people wanting to rent during off season? Winter months? Also is Mojacar the best area to look at for buying a holiday rental? I don’t know the area so any advise would be great, many thanks

Do a search, lots of threads on this and the consensus of opinion is don't bother unless your there to do the majority of the change overs/cleaning and bookings yourself. Otherwise you're not going to make much money at all.

Unless your numbers came up in last Saturday's Lotto keep your money where it is. A good way to make small money is to invest big money in a Spanish apartment - it's not worth the effort or the hassle. Like Geordiemark said look at some previous posts by me and others.

If you don't believe me just ask yourself the question Why buy property in Mojacar Playa when you can rent it for a near pittance each month during the off season? Enjoy your money while you have it.

. . . and while I'm on a roll . . . don't buy and you won't have any plonker informing you he'll mind the place for free while he enjoys free rent there. And he'll tell you he doesn't have a dog and suddenly your apartment is Canine Kennels Central.

Hi, thank you for that, yes I have rented properties myself in Spain and done it all myself, so I know agents charge a fortune to do it, I should have added I was thinking of relocating to Mojacar from Malaga to buy something to live in permanently and a little something to holiday let but I just wasn’t sure if holiday let’s are good there as  they do really well Malaga area?

Sharon, I don't want to burst your bubble. But, moving from CdS to Mojacar Playa makes sense and you'll not be the first to do so. Twenty years ago my mind was finally made up (i.e. buying an apartment in Spain) when I saw so many CdS business people retiring to Mojacar Playa. They don't make too many mistakes (especially the Scots).

If you're selling in CdS to move to Mojacar Playa and renting your property occasionally, I think it would be a good idea to buy. Otherwise, it's not a good idea.

You will get people to contradict me and that's OK too, but usually it is somebody with vested interests in having people buy rather than rent. Do the figures, they don't lie.

Ah thank you for that, I don’t know the area at all but will be driving over in June to have a look at the area and properties, it appears so much cheaper than where I live near Malaga, I just wasn’t sure if Mojacar attracts winter tourists and if I would get many holiday let’s then or if it would just be high summer season?

Mojacar is great, I've been visiting for more years than I care to remember.

Initially I looked at buying there, but for what we wanted, the costs were just too much. I bought inland in Arboleas, but we always book a night or 2 in a hotel in Mojacar for a visit while we are out.

I then explored buying a couple of apartments to rent out. You can get a really good rental return in peak season, not so much in the off season with long term lets, but lots of people do come out still for a couple or 3 months.

It just didn't stack up for me, still being based in the UK, so I'd have to pay for all the apartment upkeep/changeovers/booking management etc etc.

Thank you, yes same here people like to rent winter months for 1 or 2 months but wasn’t sure if it would be the same there, I’m looking forward to seeing what Mojacar is like, Ive also seen some nice houses in the pueblo for sale so I’m going to look there as well. 😁

1. The fact that you're leaving Málaga to live fulltime in Costa Almeria changes things and my advice for you now is to buy.

2. Property is generally cheaper than CdS so you will have some liquidity.

3. Mojacar Pueblo is beautiful, but the hills!!!!!

4. Wherever you buy obviously you'll be in situ and able to pick up rentals for whenever your new home is available and likely you'll do the cleans etc.Property in Mojacar Playa between Parque Commercial and Hotel Indalo is the busier area and sought by potential renters.

5. Get CdS out of your head; Costa Almería operates differently in many ways.  You won't get anybody on here pining that somebody has a plastic advertising sigh outside of his premises - I won't mention the poster gobshites going into meltdown over some new chipper in Nerja.
