I’ll put my hand up here and admit that I am not too concerned with what she may or may not do for the British citizens living here in Spain. On the world stage it will be more of the same, I think.

Unless she has England re-join the EU there is not much she can do.

I am more interested in how she will handle the Northern Ireland Protocol negations more than likely make a hames of it like BoJo. I imagine.

What do you as an Irish citzen have to say about that Matthew?

Have Scotland and Wales been given independence with only England rejoining the EU or was that a typical England=UK statement?

This is a woman who must put her mark on her opportunities not been a bright spark previously but hope she will come through.  Interesting that she has given the top four jobs to females and non white male.   Glad to see Raab given the push at last after the fiasco of the Afghanistan evactuation.

Will be interesting now to see what Labour comes out with regard to how they would fix the energy costs.

Excellent post, Alicia (I always knew we had some intelligent ladies on this forum).

From the BBC:-

"Kwasi Kwarteng is made chancellor, James Cleverly becomes foreign secretary and Suella Braverman replaces Priti Patel as home secretary. One of Ms Truss's closest friends, Therese Coffey, is appointed as health secretary and deputy PM."

I reckon some of this is to thwart many of the racist issues raised by Brexit and the campaign for Brexit. Something had to be done as the UK is still being seen as a state of increasing racism. Some people will disagree with me, but that just confirms their racist beliefs. Somebody should tell them what racism is.

However, interesting times lay ahead and as a person who looks in on UK politics I'm finding Liz Truss as PM interesting and I think most of us know nothing (metaphor) compared what is ahead. With Boris out of the equation, I believe there are positive times ahead for the UK.

I'm a former Labour supporter (during my short time working in the UK) and I wish Liz Truss the best of luck and we have a general election in 2.5 years to look forward to too. Very shortly it may be a case of Boris Who!

Isn't it a given that they are both part of England and considered English.

After all, when and Irish citizen, examples here is a selective list of Irish figures claimed as British by media in recent times.

Saoirse Ronan

Sky News reporter Richard Suchet called Saoirse Ronan “one of our own” when she received a BAFTA nomination for her performance in Brooklyn.

London Film Critics Circle (LFCC) nominated Saorise Ronan for Best British Actress.

Seamus Heaney

Heaney was famously included in The Penguin Book of Contemporary British Poetry. He responded to his “complimentary” inclusion like this:

Be advised my passport's green.

No glass of ours was ever raised to toast the Queen.

Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson

The London Film Critics Circle (LFCC) also nominated Fassbender, Farrell and Gleeson in their “British” categories. After the instant protests the LFCC reluctantly relabeled those categories as “British and Irish.”

Emma Donoghue

The novelist and screenplay writer was nominated in the Breakthrough British Filmmaker of the Year category for "Room"

Chris O Dowd

In 2001 during a red-carpet interview for the BIFA Awards, Chris O’Dowd was referred to as a British Actor:

Coming from being a British actor and working on something like Bridesmaids.

Irish actor, yep.

Irish actor, I apologise.

Conor McGregor

During a pre - Aldo fight interview, UFC president Dana White referred to McGregor as being from the UK.

All of Brazil will be watching him defend his title [points to Jose Aldo], all of the UK will be watching (points to Conor McGregor).

Ireland will be watching.

Ireland, Ireland. I thought that was the same thing, apparently not.

It is most certainly not.

Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy during an Interview for Inception

You both are British…

No, I’m Irish.

Yeah I know, British.

No, no, no, I’m Irish.

Oh, sorry.

Ruth Negga

Negga was called a "British Rising Star" by Telegraph and Evening standard for her role in "Loving"

Golfer Paul Dunne

BBC commentator Eddie Pepperell labelled him as British during the British Open recently

Domhnall Gleeson

GQ, The Guardian, the Evening Standard and the Daily Mail have all praised his performance in a Burberry Advert referring to him as a British Actor.

What makes me laugh is the amount of English people I meet here  is when they ask where I am from I tell them Dublin 75% of the time they ask is that North or South.

So, if you are Scottish or Welsh, I apologize for my including you in the comment.

I'm glad this topic is taking off without some of the numpty posters contributing their usual numpty posts. It is a serious subject. I am inclined to hold off on criticism of Liz Truss for a while. I think she will be good for the UK and the UK expat. I don't believe she can be any worse than her...

... predecessor who lied blatantly on many subjects (especially Brexit). Without sounding sexist, I think the time is right for a female Prime Minister in the UK and I wish her well (although when I lived in the UK I was a Labour supporter).

I don't know too much about Liz Truss, but I believe she is of Yorkshire and sincere and I don't criticise her for changing her mind on Brexit (although I'm an ardent enemy of Brexit). We are all entitled to change our mind e.g. some of the most vociferous Brexiteers known to me now believe they voted against their current beliefs.

I put her not giving a handshake to her opponent when promoted down to excitement and I don't believe anything untoward was meant by her.

Sadly Matthew she has lied throughout her career, not least regarding her schooling, I know someone personally that was at the same school in Roundhay, at the same time. Her description beggars belief.

Plus, she flip flops, from Lib Dem to Tory, from Remain to Leave.

Alas being a politician she'll only do something that will be self serving.

I think that disillusioned expats will remain disillusioned, primarily because our needs/agenda is at odds with those of the UK government and will remain so for the foreseeable future. So sad.

Liz Truss made her position on the Northern Ireland Protocol clear during her campaign - she supports ripping up the protocol, jeopardising  the Good Friday Agreement and siding with the DUP line, she also wants Braverman to start the extradition of immigrants to Rwanda (Good that she can get the Daughter of a Nigerian immigrant to do it). She was originally Lib-Dem before she realigned to Conservatives. Remember that she only got in to power with the support of the Hard Brexit Right led by Jacob Rees Mogg who is now Business Secretary, Things are going to get frostier with Truss both with the EU and Republic of Ireland if she sticks to her campaign topics and I think she is too weak to take on Mogg's cronies.

I still remember the embarrassing speech she gave about cheese (True Stateswoman :) )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFNRUuBARM4

She was born in Oxford which is not part of Yorkshire as far as I know

Bless her , only time will tell . But she definitely is not squeaky clean . She had a two year affair with a former minister which ruined his career but she soldiered on to become PM . She has to have so grit to come thru that .
