Though strangely Spain and Italy are the only two EU countries creating this problem. So much for united action.

Oh and of course we have allowed Spanish residents in the UK to exchange their licenses.

Yes … funny that.  Almost as if an EU member is a … well, Sovereign country or something …..

In all seriousness it’s bi-lateral talks.  Clearly one party or the other isn’t having their requirements met - but don’t immediately go blaming it all on Spain; Britain has demonstrated how intransigent they can be, and have also unfortunately demonstrated that any agreement signed by them is not worth the paper it’s written on

Does anyone know what the consequences would be if you were stopped by the Guardia with the new ruling? Just wondering...

1. The criminal code criminalises the conduct of Driving without a license with the loss of legally assigned points. And with a prison term of 3 to 6 months or a fine of 12 to 24 months.Jan 11, 2021   This is a straight lift from a Google search.

2.  Driving licence – not being able to present it warrants a fine of 10 euros. Presenting it, but with an expired address – a fine of 80 euros. Driving with an expired driving licence – 200 euros. Driving with a foreign driving licence that should have been renewed under ´2 year resident protocol ´- 200 euros (not going into the legality issues with that – enough info about that on our website 🙂 )

Driving with a licence that has been revoked/withdrawn – 500 euros and the loss of 4 points if you have a Spanish permit, or a foreign one that has been registered on the Registro de Conductores at Trafico. Driving with a licence renewed irregularly, so for instance in the UK while in fact a resident in Spain, in our experience fines for that offence vary between 200 and 500 euros.  This is from CAB Spain.

Take your pick.  I would also worry that it is likely to invalidate your insurance too.  Insurance companies do like anything that gives them wriggle room.

Apologies for being so negative. Karen

Yes, I know that. My wife is a resident but applied after the cut off point of 31/12/20 hence the problem.

Hold on, this must be one of rare benefits of Brexit....oops of course not, how silly of me...😂

Darn it.  Next time I vote on who will run my  country I will prioritise the driving convenience of those who choose not to live there, nor learn the language of their new country of choice  fluently.

If you live in Spain , you should have a Spanish licence … the same applies if you live in any other country other than your own , you can still drive to Spain on hoilday with a Brit licence , or go

To the post office and pay 10 pounds ( in the uk) get a driving permit for Spain. …all this is common sense you live in a country you follow there rules ….
