Hi firstly thank you to all of you for the friendly informative advice you have given us over the last month re moving to Spain possibly permanently. You have all given us the good reasons for moving, so we thought we would check out people telling of the reasons why not too and why they have come back to UK. Here goes, there is a reason why almost every house has window bars and security fencing it because burglary is rife and often done when residents are at home and are subjected to violence then tied up and gagged. Next Brits are often treated almost like undesirables are often goaded in the street and abused. These are just two examples of bad news we have heard of. Now before everyone gets carried away including me we realise there's good and bad everywhere and that drugs and violence are a common in the UK but we find the burglary story in particular a trifle concerning. This was not gleaned from just one person but one of many examples on the net. we would greatly appreciate you comments and advice as we really do want to come to southern Spain. Regards to all Mark and Jen

Hi

Although I have read about the examples that you have mentioned in your post, I have never personally come across any.

It is true there have been a small number of burglaries in my area, but these have occured when the houses have been unoccupied. In terms of interaction with local people, I can only say that I have found them warm and welcoming. Having said that I have gone out of my way to be friendly to them and it does help if you can speak a little spanish. I remember once talking in spanish to a spanish couple in a launderette in Puerto Lumbreras and they were surprised to find that I was British. Their opinion of the British was not flattering as their experience was that the British like to keep to themselves and make no attempt to learn the language nor to interact with local people.

As with Richard we live in the Puerto Lumbreras area although also have an apt in Mojacar Playa. It's still quite a Spanish area 60km from coast.

Since 2003. Burglaries x2 & att. Burglary x1, this while we were in bed.

With the exception of a Brit Builder/ kitchen fitter, all our other tradesmen are Spanish. Over 18years we have been cheated x 1 by Spanish, although our JCB driver really takes advantage, BUT over a dozen times by Brits who trade on their language & nationality. Better now but several of the conmen are.still around.

Find no.difficulty with the Spanish but then we keep to ourselves & are selective. Many Brits feel the need to enter cliques and to enhance their social standing. People re-invent themselves and cannot be checked out.

Would never think of returning to that wet, cold, overcrowded, overpriced island.

Best Wishes,

Bob and Sandra

We live in Valle del Este, Vera.  As with previous two respondents, we have only found the Spanish we encountered lovely, warm, friendly and helpful; we are also learning Spanish and ensuring we try to speak Spanish as much as we can.

As for crime ... not experienced it, not heard about it personally, haven’t encountered anyone who has suffered it.

Well matey, now you know of our.past history, the last 1/8-3/8/2017. Sat dish & wind turbine from cottage and smashed their way into our motorhome. In addition virtually every property in the vicinity of El Limite servo have experienced Criminality.

One just needs to take precautions. We just find our Spanish neighbours in Mojacar noisy & self centered. This is our personal observation.

Apologies. Still using Medical shorthand.

2 separate burglaries and the Attempted burglary where we were actually in bed. We heard the crunching over our gravel, voices and then huge bang as they attempted to force the front door.

We.believe it was connected to the fake gas inspectors that had called the week before.

But we.do have a remote cottage and no internet.

Best Wishes,

Bob and Sandra
