Hi everyone

I’ve read with interest lots of threads on here, we are in the throes of selling in the U.K. to buy in Spain thinking of renting whilst we look also to help us confirm we are in the right location, my concern is how feasible this is with brexit looming, I appreciate no one knows the full outcome but I’m very concerned we could still make Spain our retirement home any advise is very welcome as currently confused.com !

Hi Sandra.

Well I think you will find that you're not the only one with a few concerns including some of us who are already here, especially now Johnson is trying to redraft parts of the withdrawal agreement. But Spain is s great place to live so for us at least it's worth it.

If you can get over here, take out a rental contract, register on the Padron and apply for residency before Dec 31 then in my opinion there's little to lose in giving Spain a try other than the possible stress of having to do things quickly which is what we did last year to best one of the early Brexit deadlines.  Of course you can still request to apply after that but requirements will be more stringent. Just be wary of Spanish capital gains tax if you don't complete your sale this year - best to take professional advice on that. Best of luck in making your decision.

Thankyou so much for your response, we have come to the conclusion that we should get there ASAP and rent, we all know how slow the selling process is in the U.K. the stamp duty relief has gained a little momentum to the whole thing so fingers crossed completion isn’t too slow, I will get advise  on capital gains as have no clue thank you so much really appreciated

Good luck with your plans! I only arrived a couple of weeks ago so am in the early stages of the process. I'd advise you to get yourself someone to help with all the paperwork especially if your Spanish isn't great and now that time is short for us uk citizens.

If you're coming to the Vera/mojacar area I'd happily recommend Paula similie who is helping me out.

You mention retirement, if you're 65 or over it may change the capital gains tax situation greatly in your favour, so definitely take some good advice on that front.

I also opened a bank account online before I came over and transferred funds here sufficient to cover the application. If you are in receipt of regular pension income you may not need to worry about this, but I'm currently not!!! If you are uk state pensioners you'll get your S1 for healthcare, otherwise do look into a few quotes and try to get as much info in advance as you can, it reduces the stress on arrival!

Hi thankyou for this response, we are retired but neither are a pension age but are in receipt of a monthly pension

I think Vera /Mojacar will be a good base whilst we do our research so will look for a two bed to rent out whilst our sale completes very grateful for your advice hope your settling in well
