Hi there, just read your post and signed up for this forum. We want to live in Almeria and to be able to go this year. We are both retired so have a UK pension and will apply for a non lucrative visa. The form to download SC - 01 is in Spanish, do we have to translate this? Also do we need privat...

...e health insurance as have UK pension?

We are just starting out so this is all very new and at present all seems complicated.

Thanksfor this

As regards the form the one I've downloaded has English translation of questions to right hand side.  So my assumption is English is ok. If you email the embassy nearest to you they will respond fairly quickly. I sent a list of questions and they replied within an hour.

As regards the pension and health insurance my understanding is once in receipt of state pension the health care is reciprocal and therefore you do not need to purchase private insurance.

Good luck.

Good luck.

Reciprocity of health care via S1 form ended 31/12/20.  You can no longer transfer your health benefits to Spain and will therefore require Private Health Insurance.

This is relevant following Brexit.

In regards to medical coverage, the  options are available:

  1. As long as you are eligible for medical coverage in the country that pays your pension (both State Pension or Government Pension), you will be able to receive medical coverage in the country where you live. To access this coverage, you must apply for the S1 in the UK before you arrive in Spain. You must then hand over your S1 form to the INSS office in Spain to finalise the process.
  2. If you are unable to provide the S1 form, you can either opt for private medical coverage or subscribe to the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) through the Convenio Especial – this incurs a monthly fee. The SAS public health insurance scheme can only be accessed by those not entitled to healthcare in their country of origin.

I think you’ll find reciprocity for new arrivals ended 31/12.  Anyone already HERE can still get reciprocity of health cover on reaching pensionable age via S1, as that is protected under s18.1 of withdrawal agreement, however reciprocity does not apply for anyone arriving post 31/12.

As I've read it, it's States from 1/1/21.

We will have to find this out for sure as we assumed after brexit all this would change for applicants not already living in spain. We actually thought this subject was still to be sorted out between UK and Spain and was put on hold because of the virus. Will post again as soon as l know for sure, but thanks again for all your help.

Yes - exactly - 31/12/20 was it’s last valid day.  As from 1/1/21, reciprocity of health benefits was stopped for all migrants to Spain bearing a UK passport.

..., but thanks again for all your help.

The only discussions held were for the trade agreement between EU and UK; no discussions were held regarding movement of people.  When UK introduced its new points-based immigration system, it also stopped reciprocity of health care via S1.

As stated, those already here prior to 31/12/20 would still be able to get health care via S1 on reaching pensionable age as they are beneficiaries of s18.1 of the withdrawal agreement, which continues the benefits already enjoyed by people already living in an EU country prior to the end of the transition period.

Arrivals with a UK passport post 31/12 (i.e. from 1/1/21 onwards) are Third Country Nationals and subject to exactly the same requirements as those from America, Australia, South Africa, Russia etc etc.

There are NO “special arrangements” being discussed for UK passport holders.

Even Portugal which is trying to attract UK passport holders by offering a 10 year 10% tax break and lower threshold for minimum income still requires private health insurance.
