NIE application

You need an NIE to buy anything in Spain even a cheapo mobile phone. You have to have an NIE to open a bank account.

I am not sure what '' a Property Certificate is'.  Do you mean the deposit when buying a house??????

I opened my account sans NIE with Sabadell; when I obtained my NIE, I showed them and they changed account status.  You most certainly can open a bank account without NIE, you’ll need passport and NI number - that’s for Sabadell, I can’t speak for other banks.

And yes, to get an NIE in Andalusia, you need proof of needing one such as pre-sales invoice for major purchase such as a vehicle.  Wanting to open a bank account does not constitute a valid reason for needing a NIE as you can open a non-residents account with a passport.

I just got the solicitor handling the property purchase to sort it. Didn't cost a lot and zero hassle.

Dario, Just as a matter of interest, the account you opened without a NIE was that a business account or private.

When we opened our account back in Valencia (a few hundred years ago, well it feels like that) we were asked if it was private or business, they said for business you didn't need an NIE for Private you did

It was private and opened in 2014 from overseas, long before we’d even thought of the business

This is typical Spain, we opened ours in 2013 in Alicante, different rules depending on the province, I dodn't even know you could open a bank account from overseas

Yep, Sabadell just asked us to email copies of our passports, then opened the account and was able to operate on it using distance banking app - very useful.  We obviously didn’t pick up cards until we arrived, but we’re able to move money around etc.

Hi, I moved to Mojácar in September 2020 and opened an account straight away with Unicaja Bank I didn’t have an NIE number, just my passport and my P60. My solicitor dealt with everything else for me with regards to my residency application.
