My Wife and I are coming to Mojacar for Chistmas. We are staying in a B&B hotel, so we are wondering what local bars ( preferably British, but not exclusively), on or near the seafront will be open. Also if any are offering food on Christmas Day. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks

When I was in Mojacar a few weeks ago Sensations advertised a Christmas Day feast of food. Parador hotel advertises one too. There won’t be too many restaurants or bars open. Spanish places will close early on Christmas Eve, remain closed on Christmas Day, closed 26th too, but Brit places will open and be hopping on 26fh. Supermarkets will open and close early as they wish. New Year’s Eve is another time for early closing everything except bars. New Year’s Day will see all bars open. 5th January and 6th January Will see all Spanish places closed but Brit places will be open.

I recommend you don’t get caught out - Buy a few bottles of wine and chocolate for emergencies. Don’t trust the local buses on 24th, 26th, 31st, 5th Jan.  There might be another day or two between 23rd and 6th where the buses may not be plentiful.

Thanks for a very complete reply. Will look into Sensations and the Parador. I gather from your reply that many of the British bars will close on Christmas day as well?

There may be one or two open Christmas Day but probably less for hours than usual.

There's a Walking Group or two in Mojacar Playa. They meet Wednesdays at the old Los Arcos (near Cave Bar, Whacky Barber, and Cowboy cafe). They do some serious and non serious walking on hills, valleys, streets, beaches, cliffs, trails, old mines etc. You could do worse than team up with them. You don't need serious walking boots - trainers will do. Bring a hat, baseball cap and some water. It costs nothing to walk with them.

You'll have a good experience and plenty of chat, exercise and experiences Don't worry, you'll be able to keep up with them.

La Parata has a Christmas Day Menu on their website, www.restaurantelaparata.com.  Check it out for reservations though.  It has an excellent reputation and I suspect they may well be booked up.

Hi Mathew

I wonder if you could give me a few more details on the walking groups please

Sadly I recently lost my husband and would love to join a group of people who share my interest in walking it is something we were both keen on, and though i do continue to walk it would be good to perhaps have a bit of company occasionally

Thank you

Hi Tricia,

I have always been meaning to join one such group but something seems to have got in the way e.g. broke my leg on one visit to Mojacar. A few other problems arose too, but next time I visit Mojacar I'll be "signing" up to a walking group. I understand there are no formalities, just arrive and start walking. The group meets outside Los Arcos (now closed) on Wednesday mornings and journey from there. There are no fees, but if the walking area for that day is a short drive away you might be asked for €1.00 or €2.00 towards petrol. I have no contacts with the group, but from time to time I meet some who are involved and my information here is from them.

The walking group does not operate during July/August because of the heat/humidity. But, it is active during the rest of the year. I know they walked around the area of the mines in Bédar and to the masts beyond Mojacar Pueblo. I know they have walked  much more than these. There is no competition, they walk as fast as the slowest walker and adjourn for a cup of coffee after.
