Hello,

We are residents in Mojacar and have our residencia. My wife’s parents are in their late 80’s and finding living on their own now a challenge. My MotherIn Law is now confined to a wheelchair.

My questions are:

Has anybody had experience of bringing elderly parents over to live with them-do they now have to abide by the 90 day rule, or can they live with you if you do have your residency/NIE?

How about healthcare? Will they still qualify for cover under the NHS, or do we need to purchase private medical insurance for them? If we do have to purchase private medical insurance, as I mentioned they are in their late 80s with many ailments, does anybody have any knowledge of how much private medical insurance would be? That is if they could find cover!

Finally, just generally, any advice hints tips warnings would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks - I had some great advice when we first arrived last December, so I’m hoping for the same now from you lovely people.

Have a great weekend - not difficult when we are so fortunate to live in such a fantastic place!

Cheers Brian.

big problem for you.  They are British citizens so they come under the 90 day rules.  They would have to apply to come here as residents with all the financial sides even though they would live with you.  for health they could get an S1 to register in Spain once they were residents but would need medical cover until then the NHS will only cover them in the UK or on a visit via the new card for travel, emergencies only.  On going the help for the elderly in Spain is improving with some day centres opening and care homes but it is limited.  You may find yourselves having to cope with caring for them as they get more incapacitated and not much help available.

I am sure others on the forum may have more advice but I would say it is too late for them now.

Hello Alicia,

Many thanks for your response. Your answer is much as I thought.

We only arrived in Spain in December last year, we always wanted to live here. My health is pretty bad with full blown arthritis - but is slowly improving now we are in Spain.

My in laws had an apartment here from 1983 up until about 2010 - when they felt they were getting too old to travel to it frequently. We really wanted them to move out full time and not sell - but they wouldn’t because of “the kids”!

I feel terrible that, as you say, they have missed the boat because of us. They are now leading such a sad life, with my mother in law literally confined to a bed and a chair in the lounge. so sad when I think what their life could be out here with us. Dammed Brexit!

18 months ago my 97 year old mum got dementia in UK and no relatives remaining in UK. So I arranged power of attorney, got her an S1 and moved her into Residencia San Rafael nursing home near Nijar. Luckily she has enough savings/pension to pay 2650 euros per month for her single room. She is very well looked after, but does not recognise me any more, I visit her fortnightly and am still in process of getting her Residencia 18 months later. Contact me if you want to meet and talk about your situation.

Hello Nick,

Firstly let me start by saying how awful this must be for you and your family. I can only imagine the absolute heartache and grief when a parent does not recognise you.  You are obviously an admirable person looking after your Mum in this way, and for taking the effort to reply to my question with all this going on in your life.

Very interesting information, which gives me a great starting point to begin investigations.

Thank you for the offer of following up with you directly which I will certainly do should I need to.

Good luck and best wishes for you and your Mum.

Brian.
