Now that the UK has left the EU you will need more than your pension to move here, you will need €27000 per year,  plus you will have to pay for your medical insurance....its a lot harder now

27,000 a year ? How many Spanish earn that ? If you have 30,000 in the bank show them that you’ll be fine as long as you have enough to live on if you sold a house in the uk you’ll get over 400,000 or more if in London that will satisfy them .. my mate has sold his two flats in London got 750,000 he is off to Spain. Got his residency he was there in nov / Dec sorting it out. He showed them his account and he was fine. Yes different if you have to rent .

Hi, so good to see im not the only one alone still looking to move to spain. The worries i have are my mobility issues and the possibility of another hip replacement (keep wearing them out lol). I'm 60 and suffer with psoriatic arthritis therefore i think the weather in Spain would be more beneficial, plus i def want a pool to exercise in every day. I love Mojacar but it looks pretty hilly for my liking, want to be near the coast & facilities. The other worry i have is insurance to cover me should i end up in hospital, i know i will need it until i start getting my pension, any good ones you can recommend?! And one that covers prescriptions? Many Thanks.

I moved to Spain last year (pre-brexit) and have had many health issues so was concerned about insurance. I have two years before pension and at that point I will be eligible for Spanish public health care.

I contacted a number of insurance companies and when I told them of my health issues they declined to insure me. I was at the stage of giving up when I tried DKV and to my surprise they insured me without asking about pre-conditions.

So far they’ve been pretty good. Not the largest so they don’t have as many private clinics as some of the bigger companies but we’ve found an excellent GP in Vera.

Of course the down side is my pre-conditions won’t be covered so if my cancer were to return I’d be up s*** Creek with no paddle. However, the good news is that I will still be eligible for treatment in the UK so worst case scenario we go home. It’s a risk, of course, but then life is full of risk.

So far we’ve been here for 6 months and I’ve never regretted the move for a single minute. If I were to offer you advise I’d say keep quiet about pre-conditions unless they specifically ask but remember whether or not you tell them you wont be covered. Of course they will treat you in an emergency and you can pay privately for treatment.

Remember too that thanks to Brexit you will not be eligible for free public health at pensionable age (unless you already have residency).

I hope it works out for you- it’s a great place to retire! Andy

Thanks Andy for your reply. If i move there & apply for residency, will i not then be covered under their national health system when i reach retirement?? Do you have a villa with a pool? What would you say your outgoings are a month please? Thanks for your advice re insurance 👍

If you get residency under the ew stricter rules I am unsure whether you will get access to Public Health. There are plenty of people on the forum who would be able to answer that for you.

Running costs for a house are massively cheaper than the UK. For our house on the south coast we were paying around £2400 a year rates.  Here for a similar house with a pool and twice as much land it’s 600 euros (and that’s quite expensive for our area!).

The pool can be pricey I guess maybe 1200 a year. Electric pricey but of course winters are short. We are up in the hills so don’t require AC with keeps price of electric down.

Even with a pool cost of living is cheaper here than England but I’d say not massively different as there a few hidden costs that catch you out.  Maybe overall it’s 75%.

But the biggest saving is in the cost of property whether buying or renting. Andy

Hi,

My name is Nadine, looking to relocate to Mojacar at some time soon,I am a french National with french passport but have been resident and working in the Channel Islands over 40 years

Am wondering how I can exactly find out about financial requirements, if applying residencia, as I would have my Pension income, (€ 10,500..) for me ( single) plus my Pesion pots fund and also able from other fund to purchase a property/ appartement.

Will they take pension funds/ cash available in consideration too?

Can one apply for residencia if ‘only’ renting long term?

Thank you for helping, I realise I have so many questions to explore..

Lived in Cortijo Grande, Turre, many years ago for couple of years.

Loved the area

Thanks

Nadine

Hi Nadine, looks like we’re heading on a similar journey at some point, I’m also on a channel island, Guernsey, which one are you on? Maybe worth discussing ideas on potential destinations and transport? Hope your plans go well during these very strange times. Regards james
