We are doing our research into pros and cons of choosing Mojacar to purchase a holiday home, then retire there. No direct flights to Almeria airport from Scotland?? or is this a result of limited scheduled flights due to COVID. Thank you in advance of any replies

Hi MaryJ, Welcome to the forum. We had several reasons for purchasing property in Mojacar Playa. Last but not least in the number of reasons are a few Scots who had owned businesses in Costa del Sol who decided to sell up there and fully retire to Mojacar Playa.

Thank you Matthew. Another plus for Mojacar. Can’t wait to get over there to explore the area, whenever that may be!!

Hi Mary J.

I have family in East Lothian and Edinburgh and very rarely have I been able to fly to Scotland from Almeria.

Jet 2 did the summer season 2018 and 2019 to Edinburgh and then stopped, which was a great shame.  They were to have put on flights to Newcastle instead of Edinburgh last year but I suppose Covid messed up that idea.  I don't think that there will be Scottish flights from Almeria in 2021 either.

We nearly always fly from Alicante to Edinburgh and use Jet 2, Easyjet or Ryanair.  It's only two and a half hours on the road and there are lots of very reasonable car parks where we leave the car.  There were plenty of flights to Glasgow as well as Edinburgh from both Alicante and Málaga although one has to wait and see whether things will be different in the near future.

Hi Juanida

Thank you for your reply.  I think we will proceed with the decision making based on there being no guarantee of flights from Scotland to Almeria.  Still keen to come when we are able to for a look around.

Thanks again

Mary

From the playa, Almeria airport takes about 45-50 minutes, but Murcia only takes about 1h 15.  Since the sad demise of Monarch, there aren’t many (any?) out of season flights to Almeria whereas Murcia seems to me (NW of England) to be better served.  Worth checking though.  Google flights is useful, especially in ‘date grid view’ for availability.

Hi, we are in Mojacar and normally  fly from Newcastle but due to covid all fights pulled direct to Almetia. Only way will be to fly into Alicante .  Hopefully  to find a early morning flight to be able to catch the daily coach that leaves once a  day. Exclusive  coaches great service.  Stay safe. X

Hi Mary,

I would always advise people to hire a car from whichever the airport  because without your own transport, you are going to limit exactly where you buy your property.  Not everyone wants to be on the first line with the noise from the traffic, the bars etc in the summer.  There are many beautiful complexes and villas a short walk from the beach, but for shopping or getting from A to B, a local bus limits you, especially when they finish relatively early at night and are not so frequent off season at times.

The shuttle bus mentioned between Mojacar and Alicante is only once a day as someone mentioned which is not ideal.  The airport shuttle to Alicante city takes you to the bus station where there is more than one bus per day that stops at Vera bus station.   I travelled this way to Vera in 1985 knowing only a little Spanish,.  As our flight arrived at Alicante in the afternoon, we spent the night in a small hotel by bus station before catching the Barcelona - Almeria long distance bus which had loos, TV etc.  In those days there was a stop in Puerto Lumbreras for coffee and a fag as well!  In Vera, one can get a taxi from the bus station.  We had an arrangement with the guy who looked after our property who would pick us up, however care hire is certainly the best option when you are older and don't want hassle and driving is so easy in this part of Spain.
