Hello Everyone,

I am Harry, I am 30. I have been to Mojácar a few times and absolutely love it and the surrounding towns. I am very envious (in a nice way) of you all being able to live there. I would love to be able to come over and have begun to learn Spanish as a small start to making this happen. I guess I am asking how difficult it would be for me to find employment in and around the area. With (currently) no real Spanish. I have a back ground in property and I am also quite handy. This isn’t a request for a job just aninsight as to what’s around. Is there anyone of a similar age who has made the move? I am not expecting to walk into a particular job. I would be happy to work in most roles. I am very friendly.

Thanks in advance guys :)

What a great attitude! I also realise how important being fluent in Spanish is ....so in UK I only listen to Spanish - (simple radio app with a blue tooth little speaker via mobile) fun and free YouTube mad teacher called Juan (I will photo if you can’t find) and Netflix Spanish dramas using Spanish subtitles - and reading out loud Spanish books for six year olds and also whatsapp texting friends that already speak Spanish in Spanish by adding Spanish language to my mobile keyboard so it predicts palabras (words!) - I started learning in January and am quite pleased with progress eg I understand about four words in every sentance on radio now! Remember that 60% of words are the same in English so you already know a lot! Realidad; generalmente; igual; normalmente- just try adding mente or dad on the end! Pronounciation is phonectical - muy fácil (v. easy) - no text books with grammar like school learning that kills the joy of trying and Spaniards love a person that tries to speak - there is an excellent Irish guy on you tube who runs fluentinthreemonths who explains why we all can speak Spanish today - I will look for his name if you are interested? I know a lot of British immigrants stick in English groups re shops/work/friends/food but for me being fluent makes it all much easier and more enjoyable - good luck and go for it!

Hi Champ,

Yes that would be helpful. Could you send me anything you have in relation to language links etc. Also could you clarify if there are any employment opportunities around for me? Both with and without basic Spanish. These roles do not have to be well paid. Minimum wage is expected due to my circumstances.

I’ve been out here 18 months now - so with regards jobs .... weellllllll ...... yes, they DO exist but are not easy to come by.  If you do end up living in Mojácar, then during the Summer months, say May / June to September, casual bar work may be more available; during the winter months, things are a lot more static.  I also have a TEFL qualification, but English-teaching jobs are not as plentiful as one may be led to believe .....

Other than that, in the more Spanish areas, jobs will often go to friends and relatives; that’s not to say you’re not going to get a job, just that they are not in abundance and it takes a while to establish yourself.

A lot of employers also require you to have Residencia & registered with Seguridad Social.  No-one can say with any certainty what’s going to happen after the dust settles from next years March madness (let’s face it, even the Politicians who are “organizing” it don’t really know!!), but logic dictates that before employing what is now a non-EU citizen, Residencia etc will become even more important.

I would suggest aiming to come out and rent, try and bring enough to get yourself set up - and if you are not able to show an income, enough to get through the Residencia process (currently a certificate from a Spanish bank showing an annual average balance of 9.750,00 € in a Spanish bank account is required)

Un saludo, Darío

Thanks for this guys it’s really helpful! I really appreciate your advice and details. As I said I’m currently saving and learning. I am expecting if I do get a job that it will be minimum wage. What roles do you guys work in (if you work) if you don’t mind me asking?

I'm an "Network Engineer" (Geek, in other words) with a Cisco CCNA qualification.

I work part time in a bar as a barman / waiter

My darling wife, who is EVER so clever (and very driven!!) is a Spanish certified Naturopath (OCN-FENACO), a very qualified yoga teacher, holds a degree in Complimentary Alternative Medicine, a Diploma in Nutrition, a Diploma in Advanced and Deep Tissue Massage and was a Nurse .... she is self-employed, giving Yoga lessons 4 times a week (twice in Vera, twice in Turre) and is about to open her own studio.

We both of us are learning Spanish and whilst I seem to have a slight edge on my wife at the moment she is giving Yoga lessons in Spanish twice a week at the gym in Vera

Ha she sounds like quite a formidable lady! I am trained as a quantity surveyor, but I can’t imagine there is a large market for construction in this climate. I’d be happy enough behind a bar or waiting on if I could get it and doing part time handy man ad hock. Really appreciate the advice guys!
