Hello

I'm hoping to relocate to Mojacar from Edinburgh area around the end of October. Initially rent a mobile home then buy if it all works out. The busy tourism season doesn't bother me as Edinburgh is normally packed with tourists and all sorts of fringe acts going on at this time of year and like most residents, I love it.

I'm male, 63 and about to become single after a really long time. My house, joint ownership with my wife, is pretty much sold and will go to a closing date next Friday 21 August. I'll be retiring and not hugely well off but hopefully enough to get buy. I used to be a handyman soI could maybe take on a little bit of handyman work if need be.

Looking for help, guidance on what to look out for. the best way to make new friends. What i should do and not do to get me started. Should i bring my own car or sell it in the UK and buy another. I've seen different views whereby one guide says take it with you as Spanish cars hold their value and can be expensive while an view is it's expensive to register a UK car in Spain. I don't speak Spanish but would like to learn so that will take up some of my time but want an easier life with social activities.

Any help would be so appreciated.

Regards

Paul

Hi Julie

Not sure what "albox" means so presume it's predictive text striking again. My house will sell within the next week or so and I'm hoping to move out to Spain around the end of October. I'll be retiring without much pension.

I've already had one offer which is derisory so hopefully they'll sharpen their pencil and come in with something a bit more realistic. The proceeds, split 50/50 with my wife, will be my nest egg so I'll have to be careful what I do with it. What do you mean by"a vast amount of money" for next year? I intend to rent and see what the lie of the land is. I want a mobile home because I think it will be easier to meet people.

Ryanair are doing cheap flights Edinburgh to Alicante so I'm considering a recce in September for a few days even though it means I'll have to self isolate when I get back to the Uk.

Regards

Paul

Albox is a region. Myself my brother and his wife are hoping to buy a villa they fly out next Saturday to view several. Its not easy health insurance is a lot and if you not a pensioner you need it .you need a good amount of money to be able to support your self this is what weve been told

paul if you get here before Dec 31st and apply for residencia immediately and change your driving licence you can manage on a nest egg but you'll need health cover if you are not retirement age, this can be expensive.  After Dec 31st you need an annual income of a substancial amount and it will need to rise annually for you to become a resident.  if you stay here for more than 183 days in a year you are considered a tax resident and will pay tax on all income here.  bringing a car depends on the car if you have a good one and want to keep it ok but it will cost you for headlights change, reregistering on Spanish Plates and ITV.  used cars here are expensive because the Spanish tend to hang on to their cars and don't worry if they get scratched or damaged and reall old cars get scrapped for new ones with a deal through the Government

work wise that will be difficult with the results of Covid making many unemployed.  Life in a mobile home camp seems to be ok for lots of people but it get's hot in the summer and cold in the winter.  the site has bar, restaurant pool etc and a lot of retired brits you can learn Spanish there as they have a class.  you defo need transport to get any shopping though nothing within walking distance.

Thanks for that. Really useful. I do have a very nice car as it happens. Jaguar XE 2016. I'm used to driving left asnd right hand cars in Europe so I don't mind either way. I've looked into health insurance and the cheapest so far is 250 a month.

Hello again! That sounds like quite a high premium for your health insurance, unless you have pre existing conditions which are bumping it up. Do you belong to FB there is a group called brexpats in spain which has lots of good information, and has negotiated some decent health policies for members, might be worth a look.
