Yes, of course there can be Matthew.  All it will take is a government with a modicum of common sense; which could well happen when the current train wreck of a government finishes its ugly implosion.  Already the knives are out for the most corrupt, mendacious and incompetent prime min...

...ister ever to disgrace the office.  Labour are currently 14 points ahead of the Tories - the highest gap in well over a decade.  This will not please the Tory power-brokers and BoZo will be gone before much longer.

This will not lead to a sudden and crushing defeat by Labour.  Sadly they are still many many years from being a party of governor ce, but it will start the inexorable move back to closer ties now that Brexit has been shown to be the utter and abject failure it was predicted; supported now only by xenophobes, racists and straight isolationists - or those who have no actual grasp of economic reality.

It won’t even require full EU membership - just common market access, a prerequisite of which is freedom of movement.  Given hardliners seem happy to give FoM to Indian nationals to secure a trade deal significantly worse than what was in place as an EU member, granting FoM shouldn’t be a big ask - except to those who like to scream that everything is the fault of “bullying Brussels”, so displaying an astounding ignorance of the true meaning of sovereignty and the limit of hold Brussels actually has over Member States.

Assertions that the EU is on the decline are equally baseless as even Marine Le Pen has given up her call to take France out of the EU.  A couple of minor players are causing issues, but should they leave, really, like the UK, their leaving would actually strengthen the Union, rather than weaken it.

Like you so Matthew, the dynamic is changing.  A large percentage now perceives that Brexit has not been done “well” - or even at all as they are still trying to change the deal they said was “oven ready” and a “very good deal”

Pragmatists will return after this silly little experiment finally completely fails in a few years and closer ties between UK and EU will return - including, I think most importantly for many here, FoM

Wow, yet another ‘soap box’ rant Dario, Bravo.

Your point being?  So is that the result of BREXIT, the EU Commissioners, the global energy crisis, Mr Putin?

A combination of Brexit, covid, worldwide energy problems, Putin but the EU pulled together and is helping out the most affected nations to weather the crisis, in particular, Italy and Spain.

The U.K. has turned in on itself and has desperately gambled on the US giving it a trade deal to compensate for the loss of trade with the EU - good luck with that, Trump and his minions are rubbing their hands with glee. MAGA, don’t see any reference to the U.K. in there.

Putin and his dodgy money in the city of London has the corrupt, money grabbing conservatives running round in circles and laughs himself to sleep every night - and people like you fell for it - keep believing, the unicorns will turn up one day.

Very selective in your response, did not Spain just veto the 500 million euro EU energy proposal because it included nuclear and gas fired power stations?  Is not the unemployment rate in Spain close on 15%, do remind us all what it is in the U.K.,whilst you are at it perhaps you can also remind us all how the U.K. economy is doing compared to the rest of the EU.  Stop with the ‘cherry picking’ of dubious statistics.

That's a bit rich referring to money grabbing Conservatives in relation to Putin, when Barry Gardner Labour has been exposed to have received £500,000 from a Chinese spy...lol. He was a big Remainer and is a Rejoiner too. It will be interesting to see where this leads.

I think putting that allegation in context may help - Lee also had access to two previous Conservative Prime Ministers.  Gardiner declared the income in accordance with the register; beings it was in the form of donations to his office over a five year period and mostly for funding his staff.  Chinese were trying to influence MPs in Westminster … clearly they thought Gardiner would have a role to play, however he has forestalled that by cooperating fully with security services.

Interesting that the review ordered by Kwarteng only focuses on Barry Gardiner and doesn’t explore the wider possibility that other more influential MPs may have been bought … I wonder if he’s worried that such an investigation would turn up some Tory MPs? Especially considering Lee had access to two previous Prime Ministers…. Let’s face it, Tories really aren’t fussy where their money comes from, just as long as it comes.

The democratic decision to leave the EU has been taken and that part of our history is over, we are not members and not going back.

What I find amazing from these anti UK rants is the question, "if the the UK is so pathetic, their economy is so bad, the why on earth do the EU want us back?". Is it because they are concerned about the people who live there, I find that hard when they tried to prevent medical supplies being imported and tried to trash the AstraZeneca vaccine. So, what can it be they want from us, could it be our money to fill up the black hole in the EU budget? The EU do not give a monkey's about the British people and their want and success to free themselves from the shackles of the bungling corrupt bureaucratic corporate EU experiment. No, all they want is UK money, nothing else.

So, if that is not the reason then why do the EU and those who voted to remain want us back?

Thank you for artfully illustrating my point that it is only xenophobes now remaining in support of the mistake that is Brexit.

UK will return, and, happily, there will not be a damn thing you can do about it except scream in futile protest.  As was pointed out, a new generation who DO want closer ties with the EU are now approaching the point where their voice will make a difference.

As to why UK should come back … actually, if Ireland reunifies and Scotland gains independence as now seems quite possible  there’d be no need of England sooooo *shrug*

1. I am not anti UK and neither did I ever trash the UK and I don't think any people on here are in any way guilty of your statement. I think that remark should be withdrawn.

2. I believe the EU would be stronger and richer with all of the UK in it. Also, I believe most people in the UK would be happier inside the tent and I think the UK would be all the richer within.

3. A majority of voters in the UK voted for Brexit. If I believed what they were  informed by the Tories back then I'd probably have voted to leave too. I note some good posters on the forum are giving the Tories the benefit of the doubt inasmuch as Brexit is a case in progress. It's early days as I write and there's a long road yet to travel. I had given up hope that the UK would rejoin the EU during my lifetime, but with the way things are going inside the Tory party there's much more to be made known.

4. I've always believed that racism was the main driver for Brexit. Proving it though is another thing. Nobody is going to admit being racist. Take that television programme before Christmas where RNLI rescued non nationals from the English Channel by towing their damaged boat into port. There were jeers from onlookers in the port and some of them were shouting for the RNLI to tow the boat with the asylum seekers back out to sea. The scenes were disgraceful and I was appalled on what I saw and heard. I don't think any of the Irish Brexiteers in the UK can hold their heads high either; many of them (in an Irish television programme) were delighted to live in the UK and were happy to keep future immigrants out.

5. If the UK rejoins the EU I understand adopting the Euro is a must (Don't scream at me, I'm only relaying what I've read). If rejoinging happens and the GBP£ disappears, don't blame anybody but the Brexiteers.

6. Many of my UK friends in Mojacar have been burnt by Brexit (and ironically all of them voted for Brexit). Some of them are in a form of limbo not knowing whether they will be eventually deported to Gibraltar for return to the UK. They thought strength in their numbers wold win the day, but the Spaniards are not interested. Even if they do return to the UK they're left with property that they will be selling below market price of what would obtain if the UK were still in the EU. A Spanish driving test is the least of their problems.

In answer to your post Matthew,

1. My comments were not directed at you, but the many UK Remainers who post on this forum so no apology or withdrawal will be forthcoming.

2. I might add how you dare be so arrogant as to presume the majority of people in the UK would be happier if the UK re-joined the EU. It was a democratic vote to leave.

3. You refer to the Tory Brexiteers but it was the vast number of Labour Party Brexiteers in the North who got the Leave vote over the line and the it is the main reason why Labour have been unable to win an election since. The implosion inside the Tory Party has little to do with Brexit.

4. If nothing else works let's play the old racist card. What a low despicable thing to imply. Wanting to be free of the EU and control our borders has absolutely nothing to do with racism. It's called freedom, a little like the Republic of Ireland did when breaking away from the UK, that was never classed as being racist.

5. The UK would never adopt the Euro or any other failing currency.

6. I too feel deeply for those who are in limbo in Spain, but I have seen many UK expats, not yourself, saying they have no sympathy whatsoever for those Brit's who didn't register and follow the regulations.

To add, though I wish the EU well, I and many others in the UK, as can be seen from trading statistics, now by very little from the EU, preferring to buy local produce.

I take issue with point 2.  Democratic.

It was 51.8% of those who actually bothered to vote, NOT 51.8% of eligible voters, and 51.8% was deemed sufficient to set this in motion, despite it being a non-binding “information only” referendum, yet 52% was NOT sufficient in IndyRef 1 for Scotland to gain independence, as it wasn’t a big enough majority…

As for “democratic” … as I have said many times before, when it became obvious what a train wreck this was going to be, any and all calls for a confirmatory referendum were squashed by Brexit-lovers, labeling them “undemocratic” - what utter and absolute horsefeathers.  It’s “democratic” to trigger a major change on the basis of a slim majority of a portion of eligible voters in a non-binding referendum, but “undemocratic” to confirm with universal suffrage that this is indeed what the country wants?  Please, don’t bandy the word “democratic” around like it has any meaning.  The triggering of Brexit was the singular most undemocratic and lie-filled con ever perpetrated on the public and still there are those who defend it! Like I say, racists and xenophobes.  Once again thank you for again illustrating this point.
