Now Guys - you may take note or ignore this - many on this forum are really pissed off with some of the mud-slinging going on. It's time to stop. I'm not the only person thinking this and for some reason several have contacted me (perhaps it's my age) to have a quiet word and suggest the insults should stop now.

I'm not the greatest peace broker, but I think it's time to stop. What's said is said and can't be taken back. Let's quit the insults while we are all behind because if they don't we'll all find ourselves further behind.

Debate - Yes

Argument - Yes

Recognition of Everybody's Point - Yes

Insults - No. We don't have to share the same bed, but we use the same ground and we have to start somewhere.

And they always keep their toaster in a press/cupboard because they don’t like displaying their wealth 😂

Nice post from JimH. I'm not sure the readers here will grab the meaning of toasters in the cupboards. Hint:- Watch Derry Girls* on Netflix, you will be educated and entertained and all at once.

*Brilliant television programme showing Catholics and Protestants being able to laugh at each other . . . for a change.

Matthew,

I am quite happy to go through my posts over the last 3 weeks since I blocked two people from commenting on my posts and would say I have not insulted anyone intentionally in that time as far as I am aware. My opinion is that one person is responsible for the vast majority of insults and derogatory comments on this thread and has been for some time and without naming names I’m sure most readers will know who that person is.

The two important words in Northern Ireland are POWER SHARING. The unionists and nationalists signed up to that in the famous Good Friday Agreement. Unfortunately, many unionists had difficulty in translating what power sharing meant. Even Arlene Foster for years thought it meant "What We Have We...

... Hold" and what's left will be shared with nationalists. Let's cut to the chase here the situation is Unionists -V- Sinn-Féin.

Unionists never wanted to deal with former gunmen/bombers (Sinn Féin) and even now many still refuse to deal with them. Hey Matt, what does that actually mean? We're getting into the Marching Season where unionists march wherever they wish showing assertion of their authority to their faithful and intimidating those nationalists whose streets they insist on marching through. The marchers must apply in advance for planning permission to march through nationalist areas but refuse to do so because  some of the representatives of the nationalists are former IRA members.

The Irish language is important to many nationalists. Arlene Foster scoffed at the language for years and often referred to nationalists as crocodiles (e.g. "feed the crocodiles and they always come back for more"). It took Arlene Foster too long to conclude that she was feeding the hunger of extremist nationalists doing more harm to the unionist cause and without Sinn Féin having to say a word. Simply, Arlene Foster set herself up as a stool pigeon and the only people shooting against her were her own unionists. Easy win for nationalists! Own goal after own goal scored by the unionists while the nationalists just passed the ball around midfield.

Unionism has put its own back against the wall and most of them can't see this but continue to blame the nationalists whose numbers have been  getting quietly stronger and stronger over the years. Whoever succeeds Arlene Foster will automatically become Northern Ireland's First Minister and will have to appease unionists more tan he/she thinks (probably a he where a she is needed).

The foregoing is a simplification of the whole situation. No doubt a die hard unionist would get dug into me insisting I'm wrong no matter what. But, unionism is tumbling down in NI and when they feel threatened they will be the first to raise arms and that is inbuilt in their thinking.

So, Matthew / Jim - who are the front runners to take over the poisoned chalice from Arlene?  I first saw the breaking news on a Belfast News site, and the comments there seemed to think Michelle O'Neill was likely to take Arlene's spot, but the comments directed at her were as derogatory as they were at Arlene.  Another name was mentioned - Pootie? Pootle? but he was rated as worse than Arlene.  Paisley didn't rate a mention.

Now again this was Belfast News I think it was, so majority of comments would hopefully be coming from those in the area - Unionist and Nationalist alike.  The only thing that everyone seemed to agree on was that no matter who took over, they'd be worse than Foster.

Michelle O'Neill represents Sinn Féin (nationalists). She won't be a leader of a unionist political party. Whoever becomes the new leader of the DUP will be the First Minister. You can take it, it won't be a Catholic (I joke!).

There will be many contestants but the new leader doesn't have to be elected for several weeks. Much can happen in the meantime.

Michelle O’Neill is the Sinn Fein leader, they would only allow her in the DUP as their ritual sacrifice to appease their god of the Bowler hat 😂. She could end up as First Minister next year after the elections as the DUP majority was down to 1. I think that her being nominated as First Minister would collapse Stormont.

The other contenders are quite unknown to me but Paisley was embroiled in a scandal involving his holiday home and Poot is a bit of a ‘head the ball’ - the link to the contenders as to who would be King is below
