Except Spain already had a requirement for anyone desiring to reside here for more than 90 days to register, and prove they had sufficient means to support themselves, including health cover. If you couldn’t show that, you didn’t get Residencia.  Being a sovereign country they were able ...

...to do that.

You didn’t need Brexit to achieve that, just do what every other EU country was already doing. Require migrants to register and prove they had sufficient means to do so.

I think you will find that the Brits upping sticks and leaving Spanish now hadn't registered ?

They probably didn't register because as a British citizen they paid considerably less tax, and could return home at any time to use our FREE national health service.

I don't blame them for doing this, but as you can see Britain is the world leader in inviting people here with no questions asked.

I don’t think they needed to be invited to use the free NHS they contributed to all their working lives and as you say were still paying Tax in the U.K.   I think there is plenty of simple Old Fashioned Jealousy from the Brits, “ legally “ living in Spain as they have burned,or had to burn their bridges to buy and can’t go back so easily as those who left before 31st March . Who still had a base in U.K. Who will no doubt be back in three months !
