Don’t you just love the Spanish system ?

I think it’s a ridiculous system ,slow and unfair in very many ways.  I feel lucky I didn’t bother going for residency lol and that My money is still sitting in the bank . I wish everyone good luck in their New lives, they will need it.

First, pensionable age people voted 3:1 to leave, middle aged 50:50 and the young voted the reverse. it was only at the next general election that a mass of toungsters signed up to be eligible to vote/

Back to the driving licence.....

I want to know how it is that Spain can impose this law. As resident before Brexit took place I secured my European rights (allegedly). We should be treated as other EU nationals.

Spanish drivers wishing to exchange licences have no restrictions, just a similar fee to Brits that can exchange.

We are being used as political pawns by the Madrid government not treated as European citizens.

I happen to hold two passports and the second one is European too but I willnow have to do the test or leave.... second option looks promising!

The deadline is currently October 31st and may be extended but only if you applied already. When I last looked on the DGT site there was no option for the UK in the Euro zone area or the accepted system for countries outside the EU? I have written to CAB Spain as a way of getting some representation on this but I suspect  it will be ineffective because politicians are horse trading. How will future sales of preperties be affected if you are not going to be able to use a licence here?

if you were a resident then you should have already exchanged your english licence for a spanish one as soon as you got the residency then you wouldn't be in the place you're in now.

Unhelpful and rude

I am well aware of how the problem occurredbut I am in this predicament because the Guardia Civil told me that the rule would not apply to me. They had stopped me because I was travelling to my new accommodation during lockdown and were looking for a 1000 euro fine.

They informed me that because I was already resident (from 2017) that the new regulations would not apply to me. he further told me that I did not need to replace the licence until 2024. As I was having huge issues with new accommodation and solicitors I dropped my guard on lesson number one in Spain.: Get it in writing. better get an official purple stamp to go with it then you might be, might be ok - unless you change region / authority where a different set of rules apply :)

My isssue with this ONE that we have gone from an even status of licences / skill set to one of reduced circumstances - less than nationals from countries with agreements outside the EU (TWO meanwhile other EU countries get automatic exchange for a similar fee in the UK). THREE In Addition our European Citizenship rights are meaningless, we do not have the status preserved regarding our EU rights like other EU nationals.

Thanks for your comments about my stupidity, I'll pass by sometime to do an IQ test with you? :)

As Alicia said it’s always been the case that when you make your self resident I think you just have 30 days to change your driving license by law st a Spanish one, shay 123 should have changed his licence in 2017 after he made is self resident
