I have a Spanish driving licence which gives my NIE number as identification. I needed to hire a car recently at Malaga airport and used my Spanish licence as of course that is the only one I have. They then asked to see my NIE to corroborate my licence number and seemed surprised that I didn’t carry this A4 piece of paper around with me. In the end they gave me a car after I’d also shown them both my U.K. and Irish passports! Do we need to carry our NIE around with us at all times when drivin with a Spanish licence, and if so, is there a more convenient credit card size format? I know Spain loves paper, but this seemed to go above and beyond! Or was the car hire company agent just being dozy?
If you have a Spanish driving license then you must also have residency on which your NIE is printed...? I had the small card sized part of my residency document laminated to keep in my wallet, never had any trouble using that along side my Spanish driving licence with renting cars...

surely if you have residency you have a TIE card so that is your id.

No, not all of us have a TIE

No, TIE has been issued since the end (or just before) the "transition" to Brexit...this is not mandatory (yet) so anyone with the older residencia tarjeta is still valid...that of course might change but by then the UK will probably be in the EC again...(controversial perhaps...?)...we can only hope...

Some officials incorrectly call your resident document an NIE, that’s probably what they did.

You say the TIE isn't mandatory YET, but you know it will be. If all those people that put off changing their driving license had done it when it was first announced, you wouldn't have people now worrying about what will happen if they get caught without a Spanish license. Yes I know your all gonna say its going thru, but as far as Spain is concerned and arrangements between Spain and the UK , well how long is a piece of string.
To apply for your TIE is easy, do it, why are you waiting. Dont you want to be legal in the country that you have chosen to live it?

With respect, some of us have Irish passports, so TIE doesn’t apply, and yes we’ve been legal from day one.
You assume too much. Friends are waiting for their 5 year anniversary so will get a 10 year TIE, which makes sense.

with respect, you didn't explain you had an Irish passport. and as for Friends waiting for their 5yr anniversary, well good luck with that. Spain changes the rules like a snake sheds its skin.

No, they don’t change that rule Jenni - 5 years for permanent residence has been the rule for a great many years now.
Once people reach 5 years and automatically become permanent residents, then yes, on applying for their TIE they will get a 10 year TIE.
