I am taking my UK car to Lorca (on advice) for ITV prior to registering it in Spain. The car passed MOT in UK a couple of months ago so I am hopeful it will pass. If it doesn't what's the procedure? In the UK the garage would normally make the necessary repair and you would be charged a retest fee. Do ITV centres in Spain repair cars or are they just test centres? I have the V5 and I will take my NIE number and passport, is there anything I should take?

Once this is done I understand I go into Vera town hall (currently my local council) where they provide me with a tax certificate which I then have to pay at a bank? Does this have to be my bank or any bank?

Moving to Spain certainly keeps you busy!! Residency trip in two weeks and then our driving licences....

You will also need to present your insurance documents. If you haven't already done so, you can book the ITV appointment on line. When I was there last week I noticed a sign saying that you can request for a member of staff to take your vehicle through the ITV. Suggest that you make this request in the comments section of the booking. However, they did allocate an English speaking technician to me. We were in and out in 20 mins.

If your vehicle fails they give you (I think) up to 14 days to return, at no extra cost, and they just check over the previous failed area. It is just an inspection service.

For repairs, I can recommend The Garage at Arboleas. Run by a very nice British family, very good rates and great service.

No not yet. I’ve been told to get the test, then tax the car and apply to matriculate which Catservices in Arboleas are doing for me. I can’t apply for my Spanish licence until I have my residency- which has been granted I’m just awaiting an appointment for finger printing!

When I matriculated my car (2015), I needed an additional document from the main dealers, at cost. It was called ‘technica .....’ (can’t remember the other word), but it was this document that was used to ITV the car against. It’s important that the car is in its original state ie no add ons such as a tow bar, or they will fail it. It could be that the process has changed since, but worth checking out before you go. I also went to Lorca

Yes I’ve heard that fortunately it’s in its original state. I haven’t got any additional document except for the sales  invoice (I bought the car second hand) do I guess I go along and find out. Worst case is I’ll have to go back I suppose!!

Your Ficha Técnica - that will be required, yes. It is the document that specifies the original colour, equipment, tyre size etc of the car from the factory.  That is what is used to measure against for ITV and that will definitely be required.

Have you applied for an appointment to hand in EX-20 / photos / do fingerprints Andy?

Process must have changed - didn’t think you could ITV and tax until you had matriculated vehicle.

No one mentioned the Ficha technica to me I’ll have to call the itv centre this morning. I assume I’ll have to go back to the dealer in England to get hold of this. I can’t see that will be straightforward!!

My solicitor has applied for the Residencia and we are waiting for the appointment in Almeria. My    wife had to return to the UK for her mother’s funeral so it was put off initially but she is back next week.

Thanks for you help everyone looks like you May have saved me a trip!!

I am so confused! I’ve just read on a website that if my mot is up to date I don’t even need an itv anymore in order to import the vehicle! According to this expat website that rule recently changed!

I love Spain but it’s bureaucracy can be fiendishly complicated!!
