I am back in the U.K. for three months with my Spanish registered car.  I realised on return to my car in an Aldi car park that the maximum time allowed was now 1.5 hours not 2 hours as previously and I was 20 minutes over the limit.  I know Aldi use Parkingeye to enforce their parking, and this company simply photographs vehicles coming in and going out, relying on the DVLC system so they can track down overstayers and send them a fine in the post.  Does anyone know if they can track down a Spanish registered car now?  I’m rather concerned as I won’t be returning to Spain for over two months, and don’t want to get back to see a penalty notice in my buzón and no ability to reduce the fine by early payment!

Were you shopping in Aldi?  The manager does have the power to cancel the ticket. I know as I’ve just had this done at a hotel where I was staying and  the parking is ruthlessly controlled by Parking Eye .

Yes, speak to Aldi first, but if that doesn’t resolve the matter somewhere on the car park notices there should be a telephone number for you to make contact with Parking Eye to make an enquiry.

So they managed to track you down then?  Was it local authority or similar fines or a private company such as ParkingEye, and was this recent???

Some local authorities use a solicitor based in Madrid who has access to the Spanish vehicle database. London  emission/Blackwall Tunnel authorities and others forward fines to him in Madrid and I assume pay him commission once he has obtained payment.

How the hell did you spend more than 1 ½ hours in an Aldi?

Like others using parking spots, I went to other shops as well. After all, the main reason shops provide car parks is because they know it will ensure a bigger slice of the market - it’s certainly not out of the goodness of their hearts.   Booths the supermarket is next door to Aldi. While I would normally move my car from Aldi to the Booths car park, simply for easy of carrying shopping to the car, the small town had an enormous village fair on which messed up all the driving. So I shopped in Aldi, and then picked up what was missing from Booths and had lunch there.  I’m pretty sure all the shop car parks are aware their facilities are used by people going to other places - the Lidl car park in Lancaster allows 2 hours and  it’s not possible to spend that long there!  When shops have a problem with this, they usually put up a sign saying you are not allowed to leave the car park/shopping area within this time.
