I have just been told that if I am driving on my UK Licence I must always carry my passport as well as my licence because the police do not consider a driving licence formal ID and failure to produce a passport can lead to an on the spot fine.

I was surprised to hear this as over the years I have been pulled over for spot checks 3 times but never asked for a passport.

Anyone know if what I have been told is correct?

technically correct and you should also carry the MOT and Insurance, you should always carry your passport driving or not, however although not strictly legal you can carry a copy of your passport 'shrunk down' and laminated as most police seem to accept it

I follow N332 a Facebook page run by police officers in Spain. I asked the same question about driving licence/passport November 2016.

this was their reply

If you have a picture licence you dont need any other prove of identityIf  you have any motoring queries I suggest you ask them the question and they will tell you anything you want to know

My husband always takes his passport out as when he was pulled once they asked for both his passport and driving license

Hi, wherever it is your living is it a villa you bought or are renting ?

If you bought then have you got residencia ?, if you have then you must exchange your english licence for a spanish one inside 6 months of getting your residencia.

Yes you must carry all the documents you have for your vehicle, as above, insurance etc, ITV if its been matriculated would or should be displayed on your windscreen, mot if youve not had your vehicle matriculated yet.

Yes you can shrink and laminate your passport, we did ours at the local library for a few euros.

We drive a rhd honda hybrid, brought it down last march 2017 and even before matriculation onto spanish number plates were never stopped by policia local nor guardia civil.

Any other queries just ask away, usually someone has an answer.
