We need to register our UK car in Spain and change our Driving licences to Spanish ones. Our solicitor won’t get involved in this as she says it’s really appropriate work for a Gestur.

Does anyone know who could help us with this? Thanks, Andy

Hi Andy, further to your car registration transfer. This is the present requirements, prior to brexit exist.

1) you must have been the outright owner for at least 6mths, with a sales purchase document, also the UK DVLA registration must be only in the name of the person it is going to transfer to. You will also need a tax paid document to say all taxes are paid from the uk tax office (Nova?)

If you have a tow bar fitted, then you will need to remove it, or obtain local Spanish pardon.

2) You will need to have a COC, (certificate of conformity) which came with the car when new. Replacement from cars main dealer.

When your car is taken for its Itv. (Mot) it must conform to the COC. Including Tyres. Headlamps plus fog, must conform to. LHD.

3) Spanish NIE.

It you get this far, then you have a chance.

Good luck.

Y

All ok except the very first bit! I’ve only owned the car for three months! I’ve never heard that ownership stipulation before!

Sadly Spain is a hit and miss, depending on who deals with your transfer. And the 6mth ownership can rear its ugly head.

My problem my Jaguar XF is a baby in terms of miles only 65,000 but if I sell it in England I’ll get about £5000 if I’m lucky. For £5000 I’d get an old banger in Spain!!

I doubt if you will see less then a €1000 in costs to get the transfer, and thats on the mild side. My original LHD 2006. 1248cc turbo diesel mpv, cost me the four figure amout, bearing in mind, it was a LHD from new, no lights etc needed, and it sailed through the Itv, with only 4 tyre replacement, to comply with original COC.

If i was you, i would cut your losses, or trade it to one of the uk LHD specialist, who deal in LHD cars.

I didn’t know there was such a beast. You mean in Spain or back in the UK?

One thing on my side is the lights are designed to be used either left or right - I literally just pushed a switch to change it. All tyres are new and just motd so I’d hope it would pass itv.

CAT SERVICES (Laura, if I remember correctly) told me on the phone last week that driving licence transfers cannot be fine until after residencia is obtained.

I was a bit dejected at this as my own application for residency is still not nailed down, though I do now have the Padron sorted.
