Hi everyone

Before we arrive in Los Gallardos (from UK) where we’re gonna be living we wonder if it will be a better idea to buy a car in Spain or buy one left hand drive here in UK before we go?

If the price is not much more in Spain perhaps it’s better to buy there. . Has anyone had any experience with buying  a car in Spain ? And where would it be best place? Anywhere near Mojacar? Murcia. ?

I appreciate any information at all’

It’s better to buy a car in Spain as it will be automatically have Spanish registration, if you buy in the UK, you will have to pay to have it registered. Also I would recommend buying a new car, as second hand cars in Spain are very expensive compared to the UK. I have brought two cars in Spain from the Dacia garage on the main road to Vera, and have been very pleased with the service, the first car was a Dacia Sandero and I have just traded in for a Duster, both cars are excellent. Ana at the Dacia garage is very good and she speaks English.

Hope this helps

We drove here in 2018 with a U.K. car and I later drove it back alone and sold it in the U.K. There is not much demand for U.K. cars here, you will get a better price in the U.K.

After I flew back we bought a Spanish new car here. Second hand cars are expensive here, and we need reliability so we got a very low mileage demo model that was significantly discounted, from a dealer in Roquetas. All has worked out fine.

I think it all depends on whether you are buying new or second hand.

As others have said if you are buying new best just check the price difference between UK and Spain and if the price is similar buy in Spain.

If you are looking for a second hand car then these are much cheaper in UK as there are far more available due to car leasing agreements being so popular. In Spain people seem to buy the car and then keep it many years - there does not seem to be the same feeling of need to have a car less than a certain age. So second hand cars seem to be scarcer (especially recent models) and more expensive.

If you do think of importing a UK model find the co2 figures and have a word with one of the many companies who will do the registration for you. A tax is charged based on the co2 level, in addition to this you will have to have the headlights and possibly rear fog light and reversing light changed plus an ITV to get spanish paperwork and plates.

I hope this helps.

Hi.....We bought in the Los Gallardos area just before lockdown, and we bought a car from Costa Conches .....they were recommended by so many on this forum and we are so glad we did.....they have great second hand cars at reasonable prices.....and do all the paperwork for you. (English speaking as well!).. We now leave it at Umbrella parking near Alicante Airport......they also are very professional....the car is safe and it is straight out of the airport to be picked up and taken to the close by compound.....unlike some of these parking places they DO NOT keep your keys.....so no moving of cars!

may I ask, where is Costa Coches? We also bought a house in Los Gallardos and will be moving to that area within next 2 months. We will need to buy a car soon.
