Hi Guy’s

many thanks for the responses to my two previous questions, which we found extremely useful.

I have one more question: we are driving down to Mojacar on 5 Dec.

Does anybody have advise on the best sea crossing?

Is it better to do one of the shorter routes, e.g. Dover/Calais, or to take the longer overnight Brittany ferries Portsmouth/Santander or Bilbao crossing ?

We do have a dog we are bringing, hence we thought the overnight Brittany Ferry from Portsmouth (we live in Huntingdon nr. Cambridge) sailing would be better for us and the mutt.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers. Brian

Although Dover/Calais is a shorter crossing the drive down is a helluva lot longer especially with a pet

at least on the Portsmouth/Spain route the dog will be in a kennel where you can visit and walk it as and when you want,I think you would still need a 1 night hotel on the way down for your sanity and the dogs, there are plenty of doggy friendly hotels on the route

Obviously both routes may have restrictions on stopovers due to the Covid situation

If you sail to Bilbao have as little fuel in the car when you leave the UK and at the Bilbao port there is a fuel station that has the cheapest diesel ever

Just to add you can also get dog friendly cabins on Santander crossing, I would not leave my dog in the kernel on board the ship becous some of the dogs cry all the time on board, it's very distressing to here them.

Do also think about how you will organise the PCR testing within the timeframe too. It's possible this will change or be withdrawn before you travel, but  it needs to be to be considered

Good morning.  With a pet, by far the best route is the crossing to Santander or Bilbao.  With such a short time frame, I know of people who wanted a pet friendly cabin having to book well in advance ....  some months actually.  We stopped over in Burgos and stayed in the Burgos Hotel.  The manager was exceptional and even gave us his own bottle of red and white wine.  8/9 hours drive after that.  Very very easy!!!!!!  Good luck.

have you checked if there is a ferry when you want one?  it looks as if there are no ferries from Portsmouth to Bilbao on the timetable and the Santander leaves earlier than the 5th and later that's if you can get on with a dog without having a booking.   they are also being very strict about who can travel if you are travelling to your main residence you need to provide proof or they may not let you on.  just turning up is not an option now.

Hi,

Thanks for the response, yes I have looked in more detail since I wrote the post and I believe Portsmouth Bilbao or the Eurostar across (under!) the channel may be the way to go.

Very worrying though if they are turning people away who have a reservation!
