I'm stuck in Spain as my flight on the 31st of March has been cancelled, I'm rebooked for the 2nd of May, my problem is my daughter is picking us up from the airport in my car but the MOT runs out on the on April the 8th. Anybody know anything while in this vice grip, corona virus, thank you

I would have thought as the UK is not in lockdown MOT stations are open as unlike here. So l presume it would be illegal to drive it in the UK after the 8th of April unless family or a friend take it to be done in the UK for you.

I have a similar issue in that my vehicle is currently here in Spain with me, and I regularly go backwards and forwards with it.  I was due to go back in the next few days and was booked in for an MOT, but now with ferries cancelled it is stuck in Spain with me.  I think it will be September before I can take it back again.  Anyone have any ideas?  I suspect with the MOT expired I have to declare it SORN (it can live in my garage here) until I can get the MOT, which means I can't use it in Spain in the meantime.  The only legal reason to then drive it would be because I am taking it to the MOT station - can that journey begin in Southern Spain?!

you'll find that you are probably not insured to drive without an mot.  you can't get an itv because it's not on spanish plates.  This is why you shouldn't drive over here on brit plates unless you are up to date with everything.  only solution will be to get it transported back.  you may then be able to drive it in the uk to the mot station but don't know if that will be true or not.  if you SORN it you will defo not beable to drive it.   Depends what the car's worth of cause.   and don't tow it anywhere as that's not legal in Spain either. other way is go to uk hire car and trailor for a car and then come back to Spain collect your brit car and take it back but that's not cheap either sorry but that's if the penalties of going back and forth.   or you just chance it and see if your lucky.

Hi, I had a similar situation earlier this year. My MOT expired while I was in Spain. I rang my MOT station, booked the MOT for my return. I was then able to collect car, drive legally to the testing station as I had an appointment which the garage would confirm if asked (they weren’t); and the car passed its MOT. Hope that gives you some comfort. But why can’t your daughter get it tested for you?

I'm on the other side! I'm stuck in Ireland and my ITV is out at the end of March. The best I can do is book an ITV in Bilbao, drive to Mojácar (if that's legal with an appointment) and have it done in Vera. But will there not be millions of car awaiting ITV when this ends? And months to wait?

I think in that case you are OK, because when the ITV stations closed for lockdown I think it was stated that people would not be penalised for out of date ITV (the same for Modelo 720 I think?).  But I am sure you are correct that there will be a rush for ITV bookings to clear the backlog once lockdown comes to an end, and I guess the grace period afforded will depend on how long we lockdown for.

I think that you are correct about being able to drive a car without an ITV during the crisis.  However, before doing so, I would definately check with your insurance company to see what their advice is.

Previously, driving without an ITV meant that your insurance was invalid (unless you were going to an ITV station, where you had a pre-arranged appointment.
