TripAdvisor and Facebook and even few of this forum have people who have denigrated the expats who advised potential holidaymakers to remain in their own countries and not bring their version of Covid-19 to Spain. Most of the expats have obeyed all the restrictions and somehow continue to keep Covid-19 from their lives.

Suddenly, we have the brain dead people come hell or high water are intent in inflicting themselves and whatever virus they can carry on Spain. They have ignored the advice of their own government, flocked to beaches, marched in parades and continue to ignore restrictions and recommendations from their medical advisors. And some of them have now arrived in Spain and the invasion hasn't really started yet.

They are name calling their fellow countrymen who are living safely in Spain with every insult you can think up. They are even condemning the Spanish police for doing their jobs. The supermarkets have additional self styled cretins who refuse to wear facemasks or even to maintain the required number per household who can shop or even fail in the suggested distancing.

But the person who has kept their part of Spain safe is now under threat.

Hi Stu, You're not wrong, I did and subsequently I changed my mind and even put it on this forum when the self distancing was reduced from 2 metres in Ireland recently.

I should also add the Medical Advisors in Ireland for months did not support the wearing of facemasks outside of hospitals. [And if you think they got it wrong, please note Ireland's Intensive Care Unit population of Covid-19 cases is under 10 for some time; the R number is between 0.5 and 0.7 and the daily coronavirus death toll for some time has been at single figures and zero on some days. The infection rate in Ireland now is 25% from people travelling into the country- just points of information, nothing else].

I was (exceptionally) unimpressed with some of what I saw in the UK. Too many people are enjoying being paid not too work! However, the crowds around Easter and the good weather did not produce any spike in figures. All these demos, going on for a month now, have also not produced any notable spike.

Positive tests have been around 1-1.5K for a few weeks though dipping into triple figures in the last few days. Leicester is getting its butt kicked now, 2 weeks extra lockdown but not other places (yet).

I'm hopeful most of us have standards that will allow us to be safe and keep all around us safe.  There will always be the exceptions. Let's make sure we dont lower ourselves to their lowly standards. Keep safe.

Well now the floodgates are open we do expect trouble. I read today that Valencia has 6,000 hospital beds available to cope with the influx of tourists and Covid-19.

The main problem is that UK tourists ( I want to say English as N. Ireland, Scotland & Wales seem to have coped well), anyway, they won’t have had the lockdown that Spain has known. Will they adhere to the strict rules here??? After a couple of beers will they listen to a young inexperienced waiter/waitress who tell them they need to sanitise their hands and wear a mask entering a bar/restaurant.

Of course I shouldn’t generalise, but on the whole, even the most careful person will get a shock at how strict the rules are here.

Personally we have decided to keep a low profile in restaurants and bars this summer and minimise the risks as best we can.

Please do not tar us all with the same brush. My wife works from home and has hardly left the house for 3 months. We have shopping delivered when we can or I have shopped on my own and worn a mask. We are coming to Spain on 4 July and will probably be spending the first few days clearing the weeds in the garden. I understand the rules in Spain regarding masks when shopping and when unable to maintain social distancing and will adhere to them. Most people coming out to their second homes are I’m sure also aware of these rules and would be offended if  local residents believe otherwise.

Fear not - I have some words for those people as well .... although not in English.  Spanish can be so much “richer” for describing those (hopefully few) idiots that feel that rules don’t apply to them / Covid is a Hoax / COVID caused by 5G (*snigger*)

I shan’t put them here, for I will likely be censured and complained about - but know that those of us who call Spain our permanent home have by and large abided by the rules, to our greater benefit, and do not look kindly on those hopefully few of our (former?) countrymen who think that their holiday is more important than any virus.

Spanish police will likely move from “education” to “enforcement” should the non-compliance with wearing of masks continue.  They are patient to a point ... but after that, it’s possible a British traveller not wishing to comply may learn their first Spanish word.

“Multa”

Hi....I could have written this myself.

Additionally, one thing I will certainly do is put some money safely in to the Spanish small business economy. I will visit my local market, cafes and restaurants, garden centres, puppy rescue shops etc and will not only respect the rules I will expect the rules to be in force or vote with my feet. I will not be taking an "I'm all right Jack" approach.

Unfortunately, just as for other strains of flu etc,  Covid-19 is never going to disappear completely and if we dont embrace and adjust many people will suffer for reasons beyond it....we have social responsibility and must take a broader view  - one which supports our family, neighbours, friends, businesses and dare I say it 2nd home owners and tourists - castigating the latter two as a homogenous irresponsible entity wounds deep and reflects badly on the expat community. However, my commonsense tells me that the majority of expats will continue to act with the character that saw them embrace major change when they first moved to Spain...they had a broader, confident and more bold view of the world then and will do now. I look forward to meeting those on my return.

Kind Regards,  Jane

Thankfully, 'MOST' of us on here seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet. There are, no surprise, some exceptions. On another post the other day, someone thought Covid19 was not real and pointed out they had not seen piles of dead bodies anywhere (that was the basic comment). Well,...... we are all entitled to our opinions but really!! Then we had people meeting up with family & friends & hugging & kissing discussed. For reasons of transmission, I certainly felt this was a no-no. But someone else slated me and said they would carry on doing this. Apparently, I am a cabbage for this! Thats two more accounts now blocked by me.

Still as individuals we can make choices and keep ourselves safe, our friends, family, and locals, EVERYONE in fact. As Dario has said, 'Multa', may be applied to a few. These few will be the ones who will have a chance of a brush with the health system. Only 1 in 200 (approx) will die from Covid19. Might be small odds but I will be trying to stack them in my favour, and not get it. Stay safe everyone. (From a live cabbage!!). Martin.

At the risk of being shot down in flames. You say about wearing masks, ' when shopping and when unable to do social distancing' this is not correct Mask are mandatory, if you are out in public you have to wear a mask or face a 600 euros fine. Please wear one.
