Any recommendations for a bank in Mojacar, but not Santander . We were with

Branco popular for nearly 20 years a few problems but easily sorted from Uk.

Since Santander took them over we have a major problem. They have blocked the account, which is in credit,  not replied to our emails, multiple  phone calls which they don’t answer and when they do they say they are too busy and will phone back, which they don’t.

We now have to return to Spain at great expense to appear in person at their demand to sort their perceived problem out. More COVID tests added stress help!

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I can highly recommend Ibercaja next door to Corios, excellent services and very helpful and friendly staff, everything available via internet/mobile....best bank I have ever dealt with....

We called into Vera branch Monday regarding another matter, only to be told that they had also frozen my husband's account, without any notification from them at all.  I think they are checking everyone's tax status. As uk tax resident, my husband had to provide them with his 'unique tax payer reference number' (Not national insurance number) shown on his 2019/20 tax statement from HMRC which also proved him as uk fiscal tax resident.  She also took a copy of his passport (again!)

If you look on Spanish Citizens Advice Bureau, they highlight this issue.

Whilst trying to get it all sorted, I came across a notice in the bank stating they had an English speaking service helpline  Tel No. -  912 737090.  Worth a try.

We've had dreadful service from them, and as soon as our problems resolved we'll also be changing banks..  Starling Bank is one that's been recommended...

Hope you manage to resolve your problems.

Julie

I can also recommend Sabadell Bank.  Their Expansion account is 100% fee fee but does require a minimum monthly investment, and to have one of their products, such as insurance, or an investment account - still, been with them since 2014 and have not paid 1 Céntimo in fees or card charges.

Their banking app is also excellent, regular  add rly updated and you can do pretty much everything from it.  I believe Sabadell has English speaking staff in Mojácar (I’m with Vera branch}

This is interesting!

We have the ordinary Sabadell account and have had no problems and find the English speaking staff in Mojacar Playa branch very helpful. The fees are however increasing again! We are now paying €40 per quarter plus €30 for a debit card - €170 per year, that's a lot to a Yorkshireman!

We are over in 3 weeks time so I will call in to the bank and find out how much the monthly payment has to be and what the minimum deposit account is. We have insurance with Sabadell but again this is increasing each year so I may look to move this.

I will also find out if I can arrange the monthly transfer through curriencies direct to get a better exchange rate.

If that all works and we save €170 a year I owe you at least a beer!

Minimum amount, 700€ a month in and I have a small investment account with them (it’s got like 1.000€ in!!). Haven’t paid a céntimo in fees, including card.

they (and most other banks) WILL slug you around 20€ to pay in non Euro currency, so for receiving overseas payments or transfers I use the online Wise account (used to be TransferWise, changed their name) and receive in one currency, move to Euro balance (absolutely minimal conversion fee) then transfer to Bank Account, cost of transfer 0,28c …. Much much better than 20€!!

You need to change your account to an "Expansion Account" just call into the branch and they will do it for you x
