Hi Gang

House purchase going through nicely and now its time to pick a bank, it will be a holiday home so just to pay bills and money while on holiday. What bank do you recommend and any with FREE banking.

Regards

Hi John

I can recommend Santander in Calle Mejor, Garrucha.  The sub-director Senor Perez is really nice, speaks English and is very helpful.  He has helped us a lot in the last 11 years and even phoned to ask me to call in to see him to change our account for another which would suit us better.   And it does!

Many Thanks

And are they fees to the account? Mine will be just to set up direct debits so limited funds will be going into it as the property is a holiday home.

Regards

They don't pay intrest, and they do charge.

They do periodically want a copy of your tax return, they do this by disabling your card so that you go in to see them to find out what's wrong.... Rather inconvenient if you are away holiday...

I recommend the variety of Peer to Peer accounts that are now available

Sabadell is always my recommendation.  If you have their Expansión account (minimum 700€ per month going in) it is completely and totally 100% fee free for everything. (I have had an Expansión account since 2014 and have not paid 1 céntimo in fees or charges)

Vera Branch is excellent, all staff speak English (except Ignacio, but he’s learning :-D)

Thanks Dario

It will be a holiday home so just putting enough in to cover the direct debits so there won’t be 700€ going in per month so will have to go on a different account.

The banks are hard to recommend but perhaps look at Bankia Mojacar Playa not Bankia Garrucha. The staff at MP are helpful. You can open an account (free banking) a minimum of €200 / month. Pick up a leaflet ask questions. It might be what you need.

The staff do not always know that the minimum is €200/month. It is very hard to read on the back of the leaflet. I think you may have to show that the monthly payment comes from pension or salary. There is a French guy who usually sits at a desk on the left near the entrance. He is really helpful. Speaks English, Spanish and obviously French. He will talk you through it.
