I have 2 jack Russells dad and daughter............I live on the rambla just outside of Mojacar. The daughter is a nightmare....on one side or the other as soft as butter....My fault in a way have allowed absolute freedom to roam as safe to do so roudn my house she kills rabbits etc loves to hunt it is in the genes I guess and she is very territorial......she has attacked 2 of the neighbours dogs for being near our house or in our drive.........2 other Jack Russells.  I am clearly very nervous...........any suggestions. Does anyone know a trainer.........woudld that help?

yes you need to establish rules with this dog about who's in charge.  by allowing her to roam and follow her natural instincts she thinks it's her territtory and will challenge any other dogs.

Start by not allowing  free roaming and rewarding good behaviour but you will probably need someone else to do this if you are nervous as this will be picked up by the dog.

you could ask at the five bones in Turre if they know of a trainer.

Sorry but I’ve had working dogs all my life and bred jack russels on a farm environment. In my option you cannot change them from a terrier mentality to a cheeky family pet . Good luck tho

I feel for you. We used to have two adorable but challenging Jack Russells and they certainly created more than double the issues, with each exacerbating the bad habits of the other. We did consider rehoming one of them as I think they would probably have been better in separate families.

Training and dog psychologists helped a bit but you need to remain calm, in control and completely consistent at all times. They soon pick up on your anxieties.

The situation did improve when we lost Tilly, who we loved but was the nowtiest dog you could wish to meet! This allowed Alfie to calm down and we enjoyed his last years with a much less reactive dog. Good luck.

Thanks for the message..........I am thinking of rehoming Poppy which will break my heart.......as she will feel I don't want her and you can't explain.

Have to agree with Alicia here, who is in charge, the dog or you? The only dogs that are untrainable are the ones that need to be put down. If you don't want the role of being in charge you should have cats instead. Miaow! :)

Dog owners get very upset when people find their pet a nuisance but if you expect the dog to be part of the family you would not tolerate your family terrorising the neighbourhood?

Well I have bought a mussel....a tempory measure....awaiting fencing!! The little thing does not like it, but gotta be done during the day as they both go in and out. Last night as she jumped on my lap as I read, and, buried her head under my arm pit as she does, against the softness of my dressing gown..........I so wished she could understand what I say to her.....regarding her agression.......and, looking at her I thought she is as soft as butter in so many ways!! She adorable really!! At this moment my dogs and cats can get out of the garden through the surrounding bushes even if the gate is shut!! If she sees a cat/rabbit or it seems now neighbours dog near or on "Her" patch she is off like a rocket!!....Fencing will solve that problem, still allowing freedom in the garden area which is ample with no mussel .  So for now having allowed the first thing in the a.m. rambla roam mussle free, I wake early before neighbours .... she then comes back for breakfast and then lead goes on......no more freedom in the drive/garden for now till fencing done, which is a complete pain, walking to my make shift office where they have yet another bed!! So as my work gets underway at my desk.....mussel time for awhile, as doors are open, for them to get in and out while Mum is on the phone concentrating to earn to feed us all, Fence = she can continue to be free daily with no mussel, in and around the house but cannot get out...it a fairly big area so that is good. I have doors open all over ...........love fresh air.....and as Dad does not have a bad bone in his body..........it would either be mussel or fencing at home for Poppy!! So now things are in hand to be under control. Thank you so much for all your suggestions..........really appreciated and thought you might like to know how we are getting on!!
