Hi! We are looking to overwinter in Costa de Almeria - or possibly western Murcia - next winter. I would like to bring my cat with me as she’s a mummy’s girl and gets ill when I’m not around. Has anyone driven from the UK with a cat? I’m not sure if this would be more or less stressful than the cat flying to Spain. I’m wishing that I had gotten her used to travel before now! Any advice gratefully received x

I mean we will be there for three months over the winter. Until we apply for residency we can only stay for 90 days. During that time we will decide if we can make things work in Spain. x

I have some friends who used to drive down to Almería from the Midlands with their cats every April til October, pre Brexit & pre Covid.

They had a large cage fitted in the boot, big enough to hold a litter tray as well as food & water. They took the Channel Tunnel, shared the driving and only stopped for fuel, food and comfort breaks as they found staying in a hotel with cats quite stressful.   The cats were house cats so no problems once they arrived.

Good luck!

ok so your cat must be microchipped it must have an up to date rabies vacination and others best check with your vet.  not sure about the passports now for a cat as UK not in EU.

We travelled on the euro tunnel with our cat and dog to Malaga .We stopped 4 nights in pet friendly hotels on the way .when we had to leave our cat in the hotel we put her in the bathroom with her bed ,food ,water and litter tray .She cried at first as she was not use to traveling in the car .After the second day  she seemed to settle down in the car .

Hi Noamid,  I would warn you that Leukaemia is rife here in Spain amongst the ferel cats, I have lost 4 cats this year due to Leukaemia and all of them had been vaccinated . If your cat is a house cat and there is no chance she/he will mix with the local cats then you should be fine.  I also have 7 other cats and they are fine, so it really is hit and miss with this awful disease.  Just thought you should be imformed.

That is reassuring. We were thinking of Airbnb. How did you find which hotels were cat friendly? Also how many days did you take? I was thinking that we would stop south of Paris and around Girona and do it in 3 days as we are coming from Devon.
