A story from today's quality Irish newspapers. You're selling something online and you receive a telephone call from a guy/gal offering more money than advertised. The caller wants to transfer money to your bank account immediately. Your eyes light up with such a quick sale for that unwanted item and you willingly supply your bank account number. Why wouldn't you? He's offering more money than you wanted just to have it posted to him.

His address is fake, of course and when you check your bank account you learn that it contains less money now than it did twenty minutes ago. And the scammer - he claims he never scammed an honest person.

And the moral of the story is Cash is king, repeat Cash is king, and only after it has been presented to you. Never divulge your bank account number to anybody.

I always thought that your bank account number and sort code isn’t any good to them but the long number on you bank card is the important thing.

Matthew … according to the bank, the provision of an IBAN allows transfer TO your account; it does not allow access to drain the account, as there are several checks and balances - for one thing here, for money to go from my account, I have to authorize it using a one time digital code generated on my phone … I am very very interested to know how someone can access your account just by providing the IBAN.

If you provide a Credit Card number, expiry date and CVC, THAT’S a different matter … but just an IBAN? Doubtful

Talking of scams though, there’s one doing the rounds that on checking appears to have been going for at least 3 years now.

You receive an email from “EU Business Register” offering to list your company on the EBR….. there is a pdf form attached which looks very official and says “updating is free”

At the bottom though is the word “Order” and then in tiny print a whole lot of bumpf that ties you into paying these scammers 995€ for a three year insertion in their fake register.  Apparently if you fail to pay, you get a whole load of increasingly threatening emails and then yet more emails from an equally fake debt recovery agency trying to scare you into payment.

So if you receive an offer from “EU Business Registry” … delete it.

As a matter of interest to UK nationals

believe it or not, it is not safe to do the Euro Lottery online.

I made the mistake of purchasing tickets via my ipad, next thing I know

Someone in Nigeria pretending to be a travel company has taken money from my account (via debit card). The bank is aware, I got my money back, but I can no longer purchase lottery tickets online. Clearly someone is committing fraud who works for Camelot.
