do i need private health insurance for myself and my partner if we move to spain? what is e11? if so what is cost.

we our both 70yr olds with a small state pension.

what about the cost of prescriptions? i take about 15-20 tablets a day plus diabetic meds?

would be grateful for even approx cost, many thanks.

Hi,

No, at least until Brexit you can change your GP to one in Spain. You will need to contact DWP 0verseas Branch which is or used to be Newcastle.upon Tyne but now I have correspondence from Wolverhampton as well. They will issue guidance & forms and then once you have your Residencia here you can process for Healthcare/ GP. In the meanwhile you use your EHIC which you obtain on line by Google Search EHIC.gov.uk. There are Agencies that charge but just fill in the Gov Agency form & it's free & comes in the post.

As to medications, well loads are OTC at any Chemist at a cost but some aren't & not all UK meds are licensed in Spain.

So the easiest way is to employ a 'fixer' like CAT SERVICES in La Alfoquia or GL Expat Services in Turre who will arrange everything for a fee. Generally here you need to take an interpreter with you when you see a Dr. Their 'Duty of Care' is somewhat different to that which one is used to in UK.

After Brexit, who knows.

Maybe another diabetic can advise you of specific medication  costs but maybe try and get your GP/ Pharmacy to issue a 3 months supply before you leave UK.

Hope that helps,

Dr. Bob and Sandra
