I have just bought a Cortijo in Rambla Aljibe and I would like to plaster between the roof beams but it is still the old roofing which I believe may leak and I have been advised that you can waterproof this with a guarantee . Can anyone supply any information in this please and who does it

I would have thought that if your roof leaks you would be advised to remove some of the tiles  to see what the problem is if your roof is indeed the original one. Doing that you will know what course to take.  It's usually cement on top of baldos (a kind of terracotta ridged brick/tile) over the beams. If the roof had been redone at some point, there might be sheets of bitumen waterproofing between the roof tiles and cement but certainly not if the roof had never been renewed. I don't know if plastering over cane would work either.  I think it might end up falling off.  Have you though if painting it all matte white?  That can look very effective and many people do that.

Hi Karen,

Have you thought of asking a local Spanish builder about it? I say Spanish builder because houses are built very differently here and he would understand the problem. It may be simple to fix and inexpensive, and you would know it was done right and usually with a guarantee.
